At last.......The original Battlestar on Blu

This version is the U.S. release version of the 1978 movie (released in U.S. in 1979) The main difference being that Starbuck and Cassi's scene in the launch tube was changed due to the outcry from the Canadian prudes...LOL. The video I not (as# grainy as one would expect. The audio is very crisp and was remixed for Blu Ray using the same sound effects system that was used to create the "Sensurround" affect that was only used in a handful of Universal films. The VHS tape I have is in dolby stereo, ironically the DVD is in mono. My only gripe about the audio, although being wonderfully remastered in DTS, why couldn'tthey go for the full 5.1 as they did with the DVD series. Bonus features are lacking, as there are none. Perhaps on a future blu ray series release. It would nice to see the original ABC promos/bumpers. For those who like seeing those old trailers, you'll be disappointed. If memory serves, there never was an actual trailer for the movie #at least not for the 1979 release# There were several different 30 second TV spots. All of the mentioned promotional material you can see on youtube. Maybe Mr. Larson and Universal will release a series set #Just BSG, no G80# and give us some never before released goodies. Or perhaps even the 12 telefilms that were repackaged Galactica episodes. They never played those in my city. I would love to see them...but that's a story for another time. Shell out the $15 at Best Buy. #as of this writing, there were approx. 8 copies sent to each store but the bestbuy.com had placed them on backorder, currently a BB exclusive but will be in wider release this summer.

I've been a fan of Battlestar Galactica ever since I was a little kid back in the late 70s. I liked the show, I had the toys, etc. I even like the reboot series and its various spinoffs. And yes, I have the DVDs for all of it. Focusing on this release, this 35th Anniversary Blu-Ray is the original first three episodes edited together into one two hour movie. Having seen the original series only on standard definition TV and DVD, I was really looking forward to seeing the crispness of the picture and hearing great sound. BSG was shot on film and the quality shows in this transfer to Blu-Ray for this release. I watched this at a friend's house on his 32 inch Bravia and the detail was AMAZING - models, sets, actors, costumes...even the effects looked great. This is quite the jump up from the picture quality of the DVD series set I purchased a number of years ago. The sound was great and I wasn't even listening to it in 5.1! The only downside to this release is that this is an extremely bare-bones disc. There are no extras. My DVD series set has plenty of extras, and I hope that if Universal decides to release the entire series on Blu-Ray, that the extras are included, and hopefully brought up to Blu-Ray quality, too. I'll be in line on release day if that happens.

BSG started as a TV show... and then the pilot episode was recut for theatrical release as a standalone due to its success. There were a few changes to the plot since the movie version was meant to stand on its own, whereas the TV show was intended to go on for a few years. I hope we will see the whole original TV series on Blu-ray as it was shot on film and should be a nice conversion as this was. It's amazing how good this looks, as I never saw it in the theater... only on TV at home back in the day which definitely pales in comparison. It's not the modern remake, of course, but it was really good 1970s sci-fi and high-quality considering the TV budget of the time. It explored some high concepts too, so give it a try if you haven't.

Love BSG old and new, this was a nice blast from the past and since I have the new complete series on Blu ray, I had to pick up the original series movie on Blu ray since that's the version I grew up on. No bonus features included, but picture quality and sound quality is surprisingly good considering it's from 1978, if this is a test to see if the complete original series should be released on Blu ray, I hope that Universal sells enough of these to warrant a high def release.

The blu ray edition of the 1978 theatrical cut of the original BSG looks and sounds amazing! The only drawback is some of the effects shots look very poor because of the processing the film elements went through back then. It would be great if Universal were able to go back and recomposite them like Paramount has been doing for The Next Generation. In either case, hopefully this version sells well enough to warrant a blu ray release for the entire series.

Picture and sound quality are great, especially considering this was TV show from the 70's. Just disappointed that there were no extras. I mean, at least a 20-minute TV special or something ought to have been included. There's enough material out there on the classic BSG for them to have been able to find something. I would've gladly paid $5 or $10 more for some documentaries, stills, out-takes, TV promos, etc.

Every story and every saga has a beginning! I love the DTS HD Master surround sound and the improvements of the cheesy visual effects. John Dykstra did very well and the Star Wars Universe look similar but yet have a unique view! Definitely this is the one to see and to compare because it teaches what you had to work with- the basics of filmmaking!

A long needed update of the original pilot that spawn 2 series. It was ABC's answer to Star Wars, and even used some of Lucas special effects people. It shows it's age today, but I still enjoy it. This is about as best as the picture will get unless somebody cleans up the special effects. I hope they bring the rest of the series out on blu ray soon.
