Biloxi Blues [DVD] [1988]

Award-winning playwright Neil Simon wrote three autobiographical plays about a young man named Eugene Monroe. The second in the series, Biloxi Blues, was produced on Broadway with Matthew Broderick in the lead. Broderick reprises the role in the film version, while directorial duties were handed to Mike Nichols. The film comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English, French, and Spanish soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible, and the English soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but those interested may want to see the big-screen adaptation of Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs.

    Synopsis

    Biloxi Blues
Biloxi Blues was the second of playwright Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical trilogy (number one was Brighton Beach Memoirs; number three, Broadway Bound). Matthew Broderick stars as Simon's alter ego Eugene Morris Jerome, who is drafted and shipped off to boot camp in Biloxi, Mississippi in the waning days of World War II. Eugene is at the mercy of near-psychotic drill sergeant Toomey (Christopher Walken), who seems to have a personal vendetta against the poor schlemiel (Toomey also has all the film's best lines). While sweating out basic training, Eugene is indoctrinated into manhood by local prostitute Rowena (Park Overall). The film version of Biloxi Blues retains the wit and poignancy of the theatrical original--except towards the end, which pointlessly emphasizes a showdown between Eugene and Toomey. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

You'd think a 1988 movie would be available on popular Internet streaming subscription services. But this classic wasn't, and was worth the purchase price! Great to share with anyone who has a notion of basic training in the military!
