Synopsis

Cadillac Records
Directed by TV veteran Darnell Martin, the musical drama Cadillac Records documents the compelling true-life story of the Chicago record label that helped the world discover such legendary artists as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and Chuck Berry. Founded in 1950 by Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody), Chess Records quickly gained a reputation as home to some of the most talented and influential blues artists ever to step into a recording studio. But giving these musicians an opportunity to bring their music to the world was no easy task, because along the way there was enough sex, drugs, and rock & roll to ensure that things around Chess Records never got boring. Featuring Jeffrey Wright as Muddy Waters, Gabrielle Union as Geneva Wade, Beyoncé Knowles as Etta James, Mos Def as Chuck Berry, Cedric the Entertainer as Willie Dixon, and Eamonn Walker as Howlin' Wolf. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Sparkle
Academy Award nominees Stockard Channing and Bob Hoskins co-headline the British romantic comedy Sparkle, the third outing by the critically-praised writing and directing team of Neil Hunter and Tom Hunsinger (Lawless Heart, Boyfriends). Neophyte Shaun Evans plays Sam Sparks, a young man who migrates from Liverpool to London proper with his single mother, Jill (Lesley Manville) - a chanteuse in local pubs. In need of a job, Sam makes the cut at a public relations boutique by sleeping with the sixty-something head of the agency, Sheila (Channing), then (in a Graduate-like twist) falls for a girl closer to his own age, Kate (Amanda Ryan) - only to discover with horror that she's Sheila's daughter. As the expected complications ensue, Vince (Hoskins), the sexagenarian who arranged Sam and Jill's apartment in London, nurtures a deep-seated passion for Jill and decides to make his feelings fully known to her. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Fantastic Movie!! For those seeking the REAL roots

LOVED this movie!!! Finally, a new movie depicting the real Blues origins of rock 'n roll from the early '40's and '50's and the countless english and american guitarists and bands that it immediately inspired to copy it (i.e. Clapton, Led Zep, , Rolling Stones, & Elvis to name a few). Well acted and paced, this is a great, fun, eye-opening history education on black music in a very segregated America...before it was co-opted by more 'acceptable-looking' musicians of the time who all went on to make HUGE international names for themselves ripping off these originators (Literally. I didn't know that 'Surfin' USA' by the Beach Boys was stolen note-for-note from Chuck Berry's "Sweet 16" before this film...and that he later sued them, and won :) Jeffrey Wright is awesome as Muddy Waters...as well as Mos Def as Chuck Berry. Along with all the other amazing actors such as Adrian Brody, Cedric, and Beyonce, I'd definitely say that this movie is a 'must-see'! I'l be picking up a copy myself this week!

Although this movie did not recoup the production costs, it received good reviews. The soundtrack and score alone is worth the price of the movie. In addition to being based on truth, great performances by Adrien Brody and Beyonce Knowles make this a compelling story. I recommend this to anyone who loved the R&B of the 50's and 60's.
