A: Yup. Basically it makes a radio station that is connected to your phone. I honestly love mine. It costs a cup holder but is worth it to have my phones music and GPS playing inside my car speakers

A: About a foot. Maybe more.
A: When car is tuned off, unit also turned off automatically as well. No impact on car battery. Also, if you have paired with your phone once, it will automatically pair next time when you start your car.
Q: can I hook a portable CD player to this also?
A: Yes, you can without any issues!
Q: Will this allow hands free phone use
A: Definitely, this is what this device is used for this purpose. Very clear reception for hands=free conversation.
A: You can adjust to any frequency I love it. You do need your own USB cord however.
Q: Does it work while it is charging?
A: I am not sure this is what you ask, but the device does work while charging my GPS and my iPhone (both at the same time).
