    Synopsis

    Up in Smoke
Then professional potheads Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong teamed up for Cheech & Chong: Up In Smoke, which features the drug-addled duo on a road trip throughout California; that is to say, a road-trip they hope will culminate in finding some quality weed. Instead, a series of mishaps result in their respective deportations to Mexico. Desperate to get back to the states so they can perform in their band's gig later that night, Cheech and Chong unwittingly agree to drive a very unique car across the border -- rather than steel and various metal bits, the vehicle is constructed entirely out of marijuana. Back in the States and accompanied by two extraordinarily out-of-it female hitchhikers, the stoned group meanders about in an attempt to get their musical performance together, and narrowly escapes from local law enforcement agencies on numerous occasions despite their complete inability to realize they were being tailed to begin with. The incredibly low-budget movie surprised critics, grossed millions, spawned a series of lesser follow-up films, and cemented Cheech & Chong's cult-status among potheads across the globe. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Up in Smoke generally looks very nice on Blu-ray. Textural delights abound. Complex fabrics, sharp environments, crisp and deep facial lines are all commonplace. Old grimy walls, run down woods...dense object detail in stoner houses are easy to see. There are some soft edges here and there, which appear inherent to the film source rather than a fault of the transfer-to-Blu-ray process. Colors are impressive. The palette is varied and bold, nailing everything from a transparent red drum set to natural greens. Grain does appear frozen, or nearly frozen, at times, notably during the opening stretch prior to the opening titles. Grain density fluctuates a bit, less as the guys meet and get pulled over, more as they appear in court at the 20-minute mark. Overall, though, fans should be quite pleased with this 1080p presentation.

UP IN SMOKE was never great cinema, but it mirror images an era past in our history and culture. Pot is now a legal substance, but Cheech and Chong, at a time when pot would get you arrested, made smoking a joint, sometimes even a huge joint, hilarious fun. This is a film for everyone's DVD collection and now in Blu ray, and the interview with C&C in the extras is worth the price, however, modest that it is. BRAVO UP IN SMOKE...BRAVO CHEECH & CHONG!!! POOR TASTE HAS NEVER BEEN SO GOOD!!!!

First upgrade since VHS so I was quite pleased with the quality of the video and sound. How I missed this upgrade on DVD still puzzles me! I think the video quality is above average and the sound is very crisp. How I know every word to "Lowrider" is a bit scary but goodness that song snaps out of my system. The question isn't is it a worthwhile buy but more why haven't you already bought it.

Pros: Movie itself is worth buying. Beautiful artwork slip cover. Clean HD picture & even better on an OLED via 4k 60HZ upscale! Cons: New 5.1 still sounds flat & a bit distorted at times like the 70s original soundtrack. Could use a whole new remaster process.

Cheech & Chong are smokin' in this their first cinematic outing. The jokes are well paced and the movie moves at a decent clip. This new disc carries over all previous extras and offers a new interview with the stars too! Definitely worth picking up.

Cheech & Chong Up in Smoke is an interesting film that introduces the famous duo. Though it has an interesting storyline, it does not always make sense and is overall forgetful with no fully memorable parts

This movie brought back some memories. It had been so long since I had seen it, that I had I had forgot some parts. I remember this was the first time I had heard of these characters. What a blast from the past.
