I love Tom Hardy. That is the reason I bought it. He has become an actor to watch and I've liked his last few movies very much. This movie is a drama, slow and serious. He does a good job but it is a little different so it isn't for everyone. I would recommend a purchase if you are very interested in the subject, or you have already viewed it for free or on Netflix. It is not what I expected and probably would have reconsidered buying had I already seen it. I gave it four stars for the acting and the unique story.

Child 44 is taken from a Tom Rob Smith's 2008 novel by the same name which borrows parts from a Soviet Union serial killer investigation during the cold war era. Child 44 is set in the early 50s. I have not read the book but the movie was enjoyable. If you are interested in the actual true story, there is an HBO movie called Citizen X with Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland that is absolutely fantastic.

I originally bought this movie without seeing it previously based solely on the book (loved the book) and Tom Hardy. Tom could watch paint dry on screen for two hours and make it interesting. He actually made the character of Leo more human than he was in the book - he gave him more emotions. The accents in the movie are kind of ridiculous (everyone speaks in a Russian accent), but the movie itself is great. Tom and Noomi have great chemistry and it's just as great here as it was The Drop.
