    Synopsis

    Crimson Tide
Two leaders with different philosophies about battle and leadership wage war with each other in this tense military thriller. Capt. Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) is the commanding officer of a nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Alabama. Ramsey is a distinguished veteran near the end of his career, and he leads his men with an iron hand; as he puts it, "We're here to preserve democracy, not to practice it." Ramsey is assigned a new second-in-command, Lt. Cmmdr. Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington); Hunter is much younger than Ramsey, Harvard educated, and believes the goal of the military in the nuclear age is to prevent war, not fight it. While at sea, word reaches the Alabama that a splinter group of Russian forces have seized missile silos, and the ship is put on red alert. The Alabama has orders to fire, but as it is receiving a new incoming order the radio malfunctions. It's Ramsey's contention that an order is an order and they are to move forward with the attack, while Hunter feels if there is any question at all about their mission, they should wait until they can receive further instruction, with Hunter going so far as to threaten mutiny against Ramsey if the missile strike is carried out. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne both contributed to the screenplay without credit. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      Good movie, few extras.

Seeing this for the first time in ages, it still works as a tight, suspenseful, military thriller. The plot is quite good (I'm still not sure if it's plausible) and the main characters are well developed. It treats you like an adult when you're watching it, not like a bag of adrenaline. There are the stereotypical machismo cliches which seem to be required in all military movies, but they are very brief here. The acting overall is fine, but Gene Hackman of course steals the show as the intimidating captain. I had forgotten how many other actors who are now recognizable are in this film. The extras are really lacking for a bluray. There is already an extended cut of this film on a previous DVD. I'm not sure if the deleted scenes included here make up any part of that. The "on-set" feature is just actors clowning around, sometimes working, but it goes on too long. The "behind the scenes" feature is little more than a contemporary, lengthy ad. I still don't know if the story could happen, how the idea came about, what the details and decisions were in making it. The most pointless feature is the "Showcase" which simply jumps to scenes considered the best for the bluray format. It looks as good as any bluray, but as most of the movie takes place on a dark sub, it's really not the best showcase for the format. I would recommend the movie as a smart, tense action-thriller, but this release needed some more features.

Before the President was the only one authorized to launch a nucular bomb from a submarine - the sub commander was the man with the authorization! This movie is about a sub commander with an itchy trigger finger and a crew that back's him up, but when they are cut off from communication and there last received message was not clear they have to make a decision rather to launch a nucular strike or stand down. This isn't one of these nucular dissaster films, it's more of an action Navy movie and is in many way's alot like " The Hunt for Red October ". A story about what could have happened and a real must see movie!

How can you go wrong here..........Best Buy had this classic on a nice 7.99.....so i snapped it up....Blu Ray version of the movie looks sharp enough....i would recommend this purchase for the sound and picture enhancements.....i would have liked some upgraded and new Blu Ray extras like commentary ............i think this movie deserved a revisitation in this way....i wonder why that approach wasnt pursued.....oh well.....other than that....i think its a solid purchase package at a competitive price. Happy sailing.

Director Scott and the Bruckheimer/Simpson producing team give the viewer the ride of his life. Superb acting by Denzel Washington and powerhouse Gene Hackman make this a must-have for any film fan's collection. The fate of the world depends on decisions made by the captain of this nuclear submarine--and not everyone is in agreement with what he is planning.

I don't understand why this film doesn't get the same love that was lavished on "The Hunt For Red October". It's been quite some time since I last watched it, but for my money this is the superior film. Denzel Washington makes everything he is in better, of course, but this is a strong story and cast to begin with. Washington and Hackman going toe-to-toe is an absolute pleasure!

Classics never die. This film, while now starting to get on in age, is one of the modern gold standards for submarine set films. The cast is solid and it isn’t very over the top. If you’re looking for fun, look no further. If you’re looking for the thinking person’s film, you might want to keep looking.

The acting was just awesome , You cant get any better than Gene Hackman as the captain and Denzel as the XO .The aspect of the situation is something that could happen but far fetched, Over all its an awesome movie with you wondering what was going to happen next , and who was right ,in there military beliefs in that situation.

I enjoy the movie. This was Denzel's and Tony Scott's first of five collaborations. The only thing I didn't like was I didn't realize when I bought the movie that it wasn't enhanced for widescreen TV's so the picture was condensed from top to bottom.
