Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Harem Length: 12 episodes + OVA "In a world devastated by mysterious spatial quakes, Shido isn't what you'd expect in a hero. He's an average Joe who gets bossed around by his adorable little sister and mocked by the popular girls at his school. You'd definitely pick him last for dodge ball, but when it comes to saving the planet from imminent destruction, Shido's got one thing going for him: intergalactic hotties can't keep their hands off him! When the secret to stopping the spatial quakes turns out to be romancing the extraterrestrial Spirits responsible for all the chaos, Shido the loveable loser becomes the hero of all humanity. For every Spirit he makes out with, mankind breathes a little bit easier. Kiss the girls -- save the world. That name of the game is driving the space babes crazy, and nobody does it better than Shido!" Date A Live isn't quite the series I thought it was going to be from different OVAs and commercials I had seen in the past. I probably should have seen the dating sim element coming from "Date" in the title, but I thought it would be something else. That's not to say that the series isn't any good, though. I thoroughly enjoyed the bulk of it except where the girls/Spirits basically become playthings as Shido doesn't really form a true emotional connection to any of them. The graphics are great. Full 1080p native looks fantastic on a large TV. Aside from the complaint about the fate of the different girls, my only other real issue is with the English voicing. Funimation usually nails most of their Dubs; but I didn't like it here. Got my younger brother to watch it with me and he even commented that the voicing for Tohka seemed to change towards the end. The voice got way too deep and didn't feel like the character at all. I swapped back and forth with the English Dub and Japanese with subtitles depending on if I wanted to do something else at the same time. Overall, Date A Live is a good, solid series that was quite enjoyable. Unlike so many other series, it actually has a 2nd season on the way, too! The bonus features showcase the trailers for it. Keep your eyes peeled as it should be streaming later this year so we won't see it in North America until 2015 at the earliest. Check it out if you enjoy a good romance/comedy #romcom#.
