Synopsis

Dawn of the Dead
The feature-film debut of director Zack Snyder, Dawn of the Dead is a modern retelling of George Romero's 1978 horror classic, which was actually the second film in a trilogy that began with Night of the Living Dead and concluded with Day of the Dead. Sarah Polley and Ving Rhames star as two of the last remaining people on an earth that has been ravaged by flesh-eating zombies. After escaping to a shopping mall with a handful of other survivors, they decide that they only way to truly elude the approaching throng of undead is to somehow make their way to an island that is supposedly zombie-free. Jake Weber and Mekhi Phifer also star. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

Much Better Than Romero, 28 days later style.

If you're a fan of the undead, here's a definite better rendition of G.A.Romero's Dawn of the Living Dead. I love it (sarcastic I actually hate it) when all of a sudden in all of Romero's zombie movie, every character become deaf, blind and stupid--completely sensory deprived emotional 3 year olds. Slow stumbling zombies, all of a sudden jump on top of you out of nowhere off the camera frame. You're thinking, are you serious? You didn't hear or see or smell or sense that zombie 2 feet behind a car or a door. And all of a sudden you can't run away from a slowly walking zombie or shoot a gun and run at the same time or close a car window or wear gloves or long sleeve leather jackets to prevent getting bitten. Logic of human reactions in Romero's movies are so frustrating that it's almost awful to watch. However, his insight into human nature in a catastrophe is an awesome. Humans will rather fight and kill each other rather than work together even in end of humanity. "28 days later" changed the genre forever; "Crazies" and "Resident Evil"s are also good but they all have one critical flaw. They do not have the undead zombies. These movies try to explain too much and put too much rationality with viruses and disease and infections. This is why they will be always inferior to Romero's "the Deads". Zombies are zombies, no explanation required. "Dawn of the Dead" breathes new life and more rational human reaction to dire situations. It's less frustrating to watch, but it mixes too much of Romero's slow stumbling zombies with 28 days' "rabid all out sprint" zombies. It's a high budget film so the effects are top notch, the director is young and has excellent potential (i.e. "300"). It ranks on top with "Zombieland" and the original "Night of the Living Dead". A zombie fan must have.

    Better than the Romero version

Well , to say this movie is awesome is an understatement. The way Zack Synder made this film from beginning to end is superb. Being a fan of horror movies and a bigger fan of the Zombie genre, i adore this movie and have watched it at least once a week since its been in the theaters years ago. The time between movie and Dvd release almost killed me. My favorite movie of all time in any genre! I grew up watching the George Romero version and his Night and Day of the Living Dead flicks. Those are great too but I have to tell you, i wish there was a follow up to this movie. Fantastic on all accounts, the plot, the cinamatography, the acting, the dvd extras, funny, scary, dramatic. WOW- watch this! see this! buy this! tell your friends about it! NOW IF YOU WOULD EXCUSE ME I AM GOING TO WATCH IT AGAIN :)

One of the best zombie movies ever made!

This is one of my personal favorites, I love this movie! This movie is extremely intense, full throttle from beginning to end! I'm a huge zombie fan, and personally I've always like the zombies that run, not the ones that walk. It's more threatening when they're sprinting after you, instead of you being able to run circles around them. This movie was very well directed by Zach Snyder, and the screenplay is from George A. Romero. If you like zombie flicks, this one should be at the top of your list. I highly recommend it! Also, some of my personal favorite zombie (or zombie-like) films are Quarantine, 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later, Perkins 14, and Shaun of the Dead.

Arguably Zack Snyder's best movie. He introduced running zombies for the first time. His take on the Romero classic was also very fast paced. One of the best remakes i've ever seen. Scream Factory did an excellent job with this release. I was waiting for this release for a long time. I'm glad it got the Scream Factory treatment. The first blu ray release doesn't hold a candle to this. If you are a fan of this movie, this is the version you need. Includes theatrical and unrated cuts of the movie.

Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake not only introduced the world to this powerhouse director - it is also a pretty good remake. Keeping with many of Romero's main tropes, Snyder ramps everything is his film up to 11, including the zombies. I can't speak for certain, but this was definitely one of the first films to introduce the speedy undead, and with it comes a million thrills and pinch-points. Great fun!

Good remake with solid special features

Most remakes these days are simply studios going back to the well for a few more dollars. However, with Zack Snyder at the helm (director of 300), this remake was as good as I could have hoped it to be. I'm a big fan of the Zombie genre, and I would recommend this film to anyone that's a fan of horror or action films. The DVD contains several featurettes that build on the world and round out what is happening during the days events. These additions, as well as several behind-the-scenes features, set the bar for what other special-feature DVDs should strive to be.

I know it may be sacrilege to say anything can compare to the 1978 original DOTD, but this is a well made re-imagining. Kudos to Scream Factory for another fully loaded release with great picture and sound. Check it out if you are a fan of the genre and actually want to see zombies on screen and not people arguing all the time.

This movie is absolutely amazing and the picture and audio quality leave nothing to be desired. My only problem with this release is universals U-control which is a picture in picture scene access for the special features. Meaning, in order to view any of the special features you have to watch the movie with this feature on. I honestly can't say I am a fan of this implementation. Anyone who is a fan of the film, and how could you not be, would be happy to own this blu-ray.
