    Synopsis

    Donnie Brasco
This drama about an undercover cop who learns the hidden dangers of working his way inside the mob was based on a true story. Joe Pistone (Johnny Depp) is an FBI agent who is given an assignment to infiltrate the Mafia; calling himself Donnie Brasco, he befriends Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino), a low-level mob hit man whose personal life is in tatters. Lefty's marriage is falling apart, his son is a junkie, and his health is failing, which only adds to his growing disillusionment about having spent 30 years with the Mafia (and killing 26 people) with little to show for it. But in Donnie, Lefty sees someone who can succeed where he failed; he takes the young man under his wing, and under Lefty's tutelage Donnie quickly rises through the ranks of organized crime; however, the longer he plays the role of the gangster, the more Joe Pistone finds himself becoming Donnie Brasco in his increasingly rare off hours; it drives a wedge between himself and his wife (Anne Heche) and children, and Joe realizes that a break in character among the hoodlums he's come to know could mean a death sentence for himself and his family. Just as importantly, Joe has come to regard Lefty as a close and trusted friend, and Joe realizes that when the day comes where he has to turn in his Mob associates, he'll be ending Lefty's life as surely as if he put a slug in his head himself. The supporting cast includes Michael Madsen as Sonny, Lefty's boss, and Bruno Kirby as Nicky, one of Sonny's henchmen. The real-life Joe Pistone today lives under an assumed name with a 500,000-dollar contract on his life still in effect. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      Not a Fugasy!

I bought this movie when it went on sale without having seen it before and I can say I was pleasantly surprised. If you were a fan of Goodfella's then you will certainly be a fan of this one. The Blu-ray has a near reference quality transfer for picture and sound. The only drawback is that it is missing some of the special features that can be found on the standard def. releases, such as the audio commentary.

The title figure belongs to Johnny Depp but in my opinion Al Pacino is the real star of this flick. He was nominated for supporting actor, I'm not sure who won it that year but Pacino was robbed-not Al's best work but he put a lot of heart into making us sympathize for Lefty and it is what puts Depp's Brasco into conflict of saving "his friend" Great movie!

This is one of my all time favorite movies. The performances are top notch and in blu ray it shines on the screen despite having a dark, gritty feel to it. This extended version is superior the the theatrical version and the special features are plenty. To top it all off, I picked it up at Best Buy for under 10 bucks.

Now if I had not have read the book I would have said 5 stars but the film is hardly recognizable to the book. It portrays Pistone (Brasco) in a different way. However It's a good film that lets you see the mafia in another light. So good if you have read the book and great if you haven't.

First let me preface this with the fact that I'm not big into mob movies or a lot of biopics, but oh my god this movie is wonderful. Great acting, super suspenseful, and so quoteable. Glad to finally pick this up in HD and to see the extended cut. Must own movie.

True stories have a way of keeping your attention in disbelief sometimes. Pacino and Depp gave decent performances. There were no bonus features or subtitles offered on this particular blu ray. Big letdown.

The performances by Johnny Depp and Al Pacino alone make this movie worth watching, but it is a great film - especially if you enjoy mob films!
