Synopsis

Dr. No
Terence Young directed this first of a long line of screen adventures with Ian Fleming's unflappable British Secret Service Agent 007 in a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek style that set the tone for the rest of the popular series. Sean Connery sets the standard by which all future takers must measure themselves as the insouciant and devil-may-care James Bond. The story concerns Bond being sent to Jamaica to investigate the murders of a British agent and his secretary. During his investigation, he comes into contact with the evil and unscrupulous Chinese scientist Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) who, living on an island called Crab Key, is hard at work in a nuclear laboratory. Dr. No's scheme is to divert rockets being fired from Cape Canaveral off their charted course and to blackmail the United States to get their rocket launches restored to normal. Helping Bond is Ursula Andress (mostly undressed in a bikini throughout most of the film), as well as bad gals like Zena Marshall, who almost leads Bond to his death in her bedroom, and Eunice Gayson, a Bond pickup in a London gambling house who proves herself a greater adversary than even James Bond can handle. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

MGM has recently re-released their Bond Blu-rays again in anticipation of the new film SPECTRE. I own the 2012 releases which despite different cover art are the same exact discs that had just been released so my review here should still be relevant. Initially released in 2008 the current master for Dr. No still holds up as a fresh way to watch the film being one of the earlier mastered in 4K releases. This was the first Bond film so don't mind the rough around the edges feel of it but being the earliest this is one of the films that presents Bond's world being the closest to Fleming's source material with all the charm and ruthlessness present in Connery's performance. While there are some significant changes from page to screen overall this adaptation is still very faithful and in some cases improves on a few things such as adding Professor Dent and seeing Doctor No's plan in action. Overall if you're buying these films individually and are wondering where to start the first one is usually a hit or miss choice to start but here I can say as long as you don't mind an aged film this is a sterling choice.

Dr. No arrives on blu in full 1080p. The movie has received the full AVC Mpeg-4 treatment and has preserved the film's original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Considering this is a 46 year old film, the re-master looks stunning. There are no anomalies like edge enhancement, macroblocking or noise. Film grain is present but looks completely natural. For all the lovers of Bond movies, this is a must-have.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, the first Bond movie and my first Blu-Ray movie. We bought an HDMI cable for our new PS3 and this movie is just amazing in Blu-Ray. This disk also includes MANY special features including how the Blu-Ray was re-mastered from the original film stock. Fantastic job! Entertaining and great detail.

Dr. No is an amazing movie. I like it how Sean Connery rose to fame in this film. From the beginning gunbarrel sequence to the end credits, it is crystal clear. If you like James Bond 007, then you will like this movie. I love this film.
