French Kiss [DVD] [1995]

Lawrence Kasdan's light romantic comedy French Kiss comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has also been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. This is a fine disc that will please fans of the film, but there is nothing spectacular on this 20th Century Fox release. This is a problem compounded by the high-end list price.

Synopsis

French Kiss
An American woman discovers that Paris truly is the city of love -- though not in the manner she expected -- in this romantic comedy. Kate (Meg Ryan) is desperately afraid of flying, so when her fiancée Charlie (Timothy Hutton) flies to Paris on business, she must stay behind. Kate has been having second thoughts about her impending marriage, but that changes when Charlie calls her to say that the engagement is off -- he's met a beautiful French woman named Juliette (Susan Anbeh), and he's fallen in love. Determined to win Charlie back, Kate confronts her fears and hops on board the next flight to Paris, where she finds herself seated next to Luc Teyssier (Kevin Kline), a French thief who stashes some valuable jewelry in her baggage hoping to avoid capture. While Luc simply wants to get his jewels back, he pretends to be willing to help Kate find Charlie and win him back in order to keep her luggage out of harm's way, but to his surprise (as well as Kate's), the two become infatuated as they make their way through the City of Lights. Leading lady Meg Ryan also served as co-producer for this film. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

With Kevin Klein doing a great job acting as a Frenchman and Meg Ryan as a strong but insecure American/Canadian, the story flows smoothly and because Klein and Ryan work very well together their characters are both realistic and lovable. Romantic comedies don't always keep their comedic enthusiasm. French kiss does have it's slow romantic scenes but the humor never seems to fade even after a touching moment. A US actor playing a foreigner normally bothers me for many reasons but like all his movies, Klein's St. Louis Missouri origin always eludes me. Even though the ending is a bit predictable, doubtless and somewhat sudden, I'm not disappointed and even if you are, it doesn't stick in your mind like some movies and you're still able to remember the entire movie. There are many quotes that are witty and usable with a laugh. I would recommend this film for those who like a good laugh without the extreme inappropriate content found all too often today.

Love the big action movies and the ones with great twists, but this is just a purely entertaining movie for date night or a lazy afternoon. After a hard day at work, sometimes it is just nice to not have to think too hard and just sit and be entertained. This is one of those movies. Love it!

This is one of my favorite older movies and I watch it every year at least once. It was great to find it on blue ray because my DVD is getting very old.
