    Synopsis

The first season of Friends could easily have been retitled "Getting to Know You," as all the soon-to-be-familiar characters, and their equally soon-to-be familiar interrelationships, were swiftly and economically established. In the opening episode, Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) abandons her "Mr. Potato Head" spouse at the altar and moves in with her former high-school friend Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) in Monica's spacious New York loft apartment. Not long afterward, we meet Monica's brother, Ross (David Schwimmer), who is down in the dumps because his ex-wife, Carol (Jane Sibbett), has not only declared herself a lesbian, but will soon be giving birth to his son (named Ben), whom she and her partner intend to raise without any of Ross' help. Also, we are treated to the first of aspiring actor Joey Tribbiani's (Matt LeBlanc) dead-end "big breaks" when he is hired as Al Pacino's stand-in. Finally, airhead Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) is given the opportunity to perform her treacly folk songs at the gang's favorite hangout, the Central Perk coffeehouse -- only to have her debut spoiled by a citywide power blackout. In other developments, Ross "adopts" a monkey named Marcel; Joey briefly falls for Phoebe's bitchy twin sister, Ursula (also played by Lisa Kudrow); and Joey's roommate, Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), betrays a confidence by informing Rachel that Ross has a crush on her. A solid hit from the moment it left the starting gate, Friends wound up its freshman season as the eighth highest-rated program on American television. ~ Hal Erickson

I'll be one of the few folks not complaining about this set. I bought it yesterday. I watched the first four episodes already. And twelve episodes on a disc is pretty sweet (to go from 4 to 2 per season)! First of all its finally in Bluray! Picture is pretty stunning, audio sounds fantastic and it's in widescreen format unlike my standard full screen format dvd's which i will never watch again with the bluray age world. I was reading all the negative comments and i have to say that I don't personally care if the broadcast versions are whats here in these. I don't have the lines memorized anyhow so a few lines taken out here and there didn't stop me from buying this on bluray. So far i've been far from disappointed! The boxset is very nice! It contains a nice book of all the episodes, airdates and descriptions. The book of discs are beautiful in a hard protective magnetic book cover. I'm actually very impressed with the way this set was put together. And the price is very reasonable for the whole series at $150.

      Just an excuse

I'm sick of hearing the excuse that we're not getting the uncut versions because of the inability to have the cut scenes and lines in 1080P. These scenes and lines were filmed right along with the rest, so why are they saying its not possible? The only reason they are saying it isn't possible is actually because they got lazy, they decided to use the TV versions of the episodes which had already been remastered in HD without bothering with the scenes and lines that were cut. Why would I buy this when I have the unedited episodes on my DVDs? If I want to see friends in HD without these scenes and lines I adore I can just watch the show on tv. I think they really shot themselves in the foot here.

Awsome, FRIENDS on blue ray, i have to get it becose my wife and I love this show and have them on dvd. So we sat down to start watching and we are both loving the widescreen format and the clearity. But after the first three episodes we had to quit watching for the fact they are missing lines that were shown on the dvds that we had been watching for years. after a month or so I got over it, my wife has yet to. With that said, you should get the blue rays for quality, keep your dvds if you are a die hard fan. It is nice to have them in a wide format for new tvs, you see things off frame that you did not on full screen; the little reactions, parts of the set, little things like that. be informed befor you buy.

If you love friends, you will love the blu ray! I have the very old DVD versions of Friends and played in comparison, and of course the blu ray surpasses the DVD in every way. They opened up the blu ray version picture so more is seen on screen which is a nice touch. You definitely see more detail on the blu ray that you could really make out on the dvd versions. The blu ray versions also do not have the dvd extra footage put into the episodes, so if your looking for that keep your dvds! This is an amazing product that deserves all the recognition it deserves! Pop culture at it's finest!

The other reviewers point out that these cuts are the original cuts made for the initial broadcast. The reason WB did not give us the dvd cuts with the extra footage is because the extra footage is no longer in a format that can be converted to 1080p HD. Yes it stinks, but I'd rather have it play through clear then have it interspersed with horrible quality footage. And I say horrible because the DVDs was worse then SD.

Friends has been off the air for just over 10yrs now yet, lives on in syndication around the world and I found myself still watching and laughing my @$$ off even though I'd seen the episodes countless times. So I bought the blu ray box set for my collection. The box is great with 22 discs inside and includes extra features and behind the scenes footage as well as bloopers which are hilarious. It also comes with a nice collectors book with colour photos and information about the show. Friends is to my generation what I love Lucy was to my parents generation.

Very disappointed extra scenes cut out to fit each season on two discs. The DVD collection is way better. There is a difference in the picture quality but not worth purchasing if you already have the DVDs. When the blu Ray is advertised it says there's lots of extras. There is not there are more extras on my DVDs collection. Bottom line don't waste your money

So we finally get Friends on blu-ray. Finally! And what we get is HD quality with less footage than that of the DVD boxset. So you can expect wonderful quality, but don't feel bad for yourself when you're missing all the extended unedited cuts that were on the DVDs. Fail...absolutely fail.
