Great Unit - Don't Believe the Negative Reviews

Several negative reviews of this product are downright false. I read the reviews and was concerned, but figured I could return the unit if they were really true, but they were not. I have worked with this unit for several weeks and am extremely happy with it, especially considering that I bought it to replace my Ram 1500 in-car GPS that used the same software, but failed for hardware reasons. Ram wants thousands to replace it and wants $149 just to update the maps. This unit functions exactly the same as my Ram navigation unit for less than a map update in the vehicle system costs, plus it comes with free lifetime map updates. Here are the false negative review claims debunked: (1) The unit DOES automatically recalculate routes when you drive down a different road than on the route shown. Reviews that say it does not recalculate are false and this unit works seamlessly to guide you through detours on your route. (2) This unit DOES NOT automatically shut off when power is disconnected. When the power is disconnected, it tells you it will shut down in 15 seconds unless you tap the screen button to keep it on. If you do keep it on, it will stay active for over an hour (personally tested this). (3) The unite DOES NOT need to be reprogrammed every time it shuts off. I have tested this repeatedly, putting in a route, partially driving that route, then powering off the unit. When the unit powers back up, the route comes back up as well along with all of your personal settings (like the "north-up" map view I prefer to use. (4) Updating software and maps DOES NOT take hours. Mine went through the full process when I purchased it in 28 minutes total. (5) The mounting hardware IS very sturdy. Despite reviews that say otherwise, the mount is so secure that you really have to work to remove it. (6) The power cable IS very secure. The cable clicks in and remains seated despite some light pulling and tugging. It won't "fall out" as claimed by another review (unless you yank VERY hard...) BOTTOM LINE: This is a very reliable unit that solves the data connectivity issues of cell phone navigation when going through areas with no or limited cell service. It works flawlessly, is easy to use and understand, and appearance wise fits ascetically well within the dash area of the vehicle. For Dodge/Ram/Jeep/Chrysler owners with a navigation system that fails, this is your best bet for replacement and will save you thousands for the same software you are used to having.

So this is the first GPS system I've had. I did lots of research and asked around and they said get Garmin, it's the best. Well....I'm not so sure if I'd call it the best. I've actually contemplated about taking it back. I bought a GPS because I was going to be going to Florida on vacation, my phone last time kept losing its signal (I've since gotten a new phone), and I wasn't for sure if my rental car would have GPS in it, and I needed to know how to get around. I updated the GPS before leaving (which took at least 6 hours). I ended up using my phone GPS to get from the airport to the hotel because the guy in the car lot pulled my car up for me and there were people behind me so it was just quicker. Once I get to the hotel I plug my GPS in to make sure it is still fully charged and I added in all my locations I'd be going to for sure. Well someone told me about Lovers Key beach so I tried getting the GPS to tell me where to go and it couldn't find it. (It took a little bit to realize I was in Florida and not Iowa anymore too. It couldn't find one of the addresses I was looking for either.) So that night I used my phone GPS to get to the beach. The next day I was headed to Ochopee so I plugged the GPS into the car and programmed it. Well, about halfway through the drive I realized the GPS died while it was plugged in. Thank God I had my phone GPS on too (because of the issues from the night before). So all day Monday I couldn't use this device. When I do get back to the hotel I plug it in there to charge and go to use it Tuesday and it again said it was still dead and wouldn't turn on so I plugged it in again and left it in the hotel, using my phone for the 3rd day in a row. I didn't need it Wednesday as my aunt who lives down there took us places. Thursday I didn't even bother trying to use it, I just used my phone to look up shopping around the area and had my phone give me directions. FINALLY, on Friday it worked the whole way to my destination though I had my phone going too just in case. I just ended up using my phone the rest of the trip due to the bad luck I was already having with it. Yesterday was the first time I've tried using it since that Friday morning two weeks ago and it worked going to my doctor's appointment (again I used my phone too just in case, but it did work). It did take a little bit to find the address though. Because of it not working when I really needed it to I say save your money and try something better. If it wasn't for my phone GPS working I would've been completely lost in Florida.

Great Little GPS for the price

I haven't had my Garmin for too long, but so far I love it! Far exceeded my expectations for my first GPS (other than my phone). Easy turn by turn directions, written-shown-AND-spoken on the screen, easy to enter locations, gives the options of using highways or avoiding them if you wish, tells you when there are turns-bends-and curves- up ahead, shows the posted speed limits in the area and even tells you your speed that you are going and alerts you if you are going over the speed limit. I love the option of using TripAdvisor if I want to check out what's in the area for something specific. But my absolute favorite feature, that I don't think is mentioned in the product description, is the ability to add a back up camera to this gps and it will appear right on the screen when you reverse. Garmin sells the backup camera separately and it is a little pricey, but it's a great safety feature and nice option if your car did not come built with one already in. My only complaints are that sometimes the voice can randomly get lower while reading off directions for no apparent reason, and the battery only lasts an hour if not kept plugged in, so I would recommend leaving it plugged in while in use always. Other than that fantastic GPS and Best Buy usually has it on sale quite often! :)

This GPS is pretty sad. I used to own a Garmin back when they were first released. The fact that they haven't changed much over the past decade is saying something. In fact, I wager they've gotten worse. First off, the user friendly interface that comes with Garmin is at least something you would enjoy if you purchase this product. Will this GPS get you from point A to B? Maybe. Probably. That's why it gets 2 stars. The routes and navigation system appear to be user friendly. They display which LANE you need to be in as well as what to expect. I was a fan of both the display visibility as well as the clear instructions. Why, then, would I give such a low rating? First off, this is a $100 device offering me very little for that price range. US only maps (doesn't include Canada/Mexico- I knew this and it didn't affect the reason I purchased it but some may want to know!) is a major bummer. Mainly, I tried to use this in the mountains (Rockies). It was unreliable and couldn't find the GPS often- and that's the whole reason I purchased this (because I couldn't trust I'd get cell service). I can even forgive that a little bit, but one of the worst peeves of mine is that this device doesn't like to work without being plugged in. It turns itself off after a set time if there is no "external power" source. I used to sit down and look for nearby things while we were eating or even in a hotel. Now I can barely do it without it spazzing about needing a power source- even with a full charge. Not only that, but it had a hard time finding where we were a good majority of the time. Maybe I got a bad GPS in general, but I cannot in good faith recommend this product at this price point. Even with limited to no cell service, my phone provided far better directions.

DO NOT BUY LASTED 1 hour

      Posted

this is the biggest piece of junk I have ever wasted money on. I have heard bad things about Garmin, but read good reviews for this particular item so I bit the bullet and ordered. I have a TomTom that is 5 years old that has never left me stranded, prior to that I had a Magellan that I gave to a friend and they are still using it. I purchased this item on 2/26/2018 it arrived 2/28/2018 and just turned it on to verify it worked. Today I downloaded the Garmin express app to update the maps and software, plugged the gps into my computer (which is also new) it powered up and the app said there was software and map/traffic updates. You have to update the software first, then when that is finished (appx 1 hour) it asks you to unplug the gps for 5 sec and plug it back in. I unplugged the gps from the computer, it was almost at full battery, it powered off and has never turned back on. Plugged it back in, like the app says, nothing, pushed the power button, nothing the computer doesn't see it, and even unplugged from the computer it will not turn on. It is completely dead and useless after one update and never even getting to use it in my vehicle. Before you ask, yes it is charged. The battery showed nearly full when the update was complete before being prompted to restart it/unplug it. yes I tried holding the power button as suggested in the online manual. The unit is completely dead after less then an hour. I have had it for 4 days, it was powered up for less then an hour. I am returning to Best Buy and they better give me a complete refund with none of that restocking fee nonsense for an item that never worked. Invest in a TOMTOM, mine still works and its five years old and that's all my friends and family have ever owned and have never had a problem. JUNK JUNK JUNK

good maps and directions, wimpy alerts

This Garmin unit was intended to replace/supplement an older Magellan unit. Both units have “lifetime” map updates with traffic alerts. It seemed the Garmin maps were a little more accurate or more up to date, based on a trial drive. Where the Garmin outperformed the Magellan seemed to be in its voice directions. Where the Magellan would simply say “at the next intersection turn right” and prompt the turn with a musical “ding-ding,” the Garmin unit says something like “turn right at the stop sign,” and darned if there wasn’t a stop sign at the intersection, just like the unit said. But for the traffic alerts, the Garmin unit only issues a mild tone if the driver exceeds the posted speed limit (and shows the speed highlighted in red, which requires the driver to look at the unit) whereas the Magellan unit says “Warning!” followed by a sharp “ding,” so it really catches your attention without needing to look at the screen. The Garmin unit does have a slot on the back for a microSD memory card to store route information, and according to the manufacturer the unit can also be used as a display screen when driving in reverse using a proprietary backup camera (expensive). For its points of interest data, Garmin uses TripAdvisor while the Magellan uses AAA. Destinations can be entered using address or a point of interest for either unit. As of now, the wimpy traffic alert for the Garmin keeps it from totally replacing the Magellan.

My family has too many registered vehicles. Once you get used to a GPS, it is difficult to live without one. And it is much easier to have a GPS in every car than to move one around, especially with multiple drivers for the various vehicles. With one exception, all the GPS's are Garmin with three of them being 5" models with lifetime map updates. We have been very happy with them so this selection was almost automatic. The only problem with this particular Black Friday season purchase was that I neglected to check the shipping paperwork which stated that the GPS had been part of the shipment when in fact it had not. Consequently just a few days before Christmas when attempting to wrap all the gifts up, I discovered the GPS was missing from the Best Buy box. I frantically called Best Buy Customer Service to note the problem. To my surprise and delight, the Customer Service Representative patiently listed to my tale of woe, and told me that the shipping records indicated that the item had been shipped but that an investigation would be started. However, in the meanwhile, a new unit would be shipped and assured me that I would have it in time for Christmas. The unit was received in about two days! I am writing this review to highlight what an excellent job the Best Customer Service department did. The GPS is a fine unit, but the Best Buy Team is really the BEST.

I needed an updated gps and I picked this one because it had the most current maps already on it and it was finally on sale. My old garmin was out of date and I didn't have free map updates so this is exactly what I need. I like how loud it is and you can set it to any volume. I actually had to turn the volume down. I like that you can set what you want to see on the map as your driving. You can turn off anything you don't want to see or add to it. You can pick from a handful of map colors as well. You type in the address like you would into Google. My old one you had to type the city, then the street, then the house number all on different pages. This is just one search and done. You can pick your route based on what you want like avoiding tolls or speed. This just has a lot of features on it that are pretty typical and some are travelzoo picks and different browsing choices. I used to look up on google the best route and then go that way while running my old gps and it would adjust itself as I drove. With this gps it took me exactly the way I would go on my route using the google way and I was surprised. So this gps is really great, it has the latest maps for 2017 already on it which is what I need. I liked being able to personalize the screen once and leave it alone. And I got it for $90 which is great for a new release.
