Synopsis

GoodFellas
Martin Scorsese explores the life of organized crime with his gritty, kinetic adaptation of Nicolas Pileggi's best-selling Wiseguy, the true-life account of mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill. Set to a true-to-period rock soundtrack, the story details the rise and fall of Hill, a half-Irish, half-Sicilian New York kid who grows up idolizing the "wise guys" in his impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood. He begins hanging around the mobsters, running errands and doing odd jobs until he gains the notice of local chieftain Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino), who takes him in as a surrogate son. As he reaches his teens, Hill (Ray Liotta) is inducted into the world of petty crime, where he distinguishes himself as a "stand-up guy" by choosing jail time over ratting on his accomplices. From that moment on, he is a part of the family. Along with his psychotic partner Tommy (Joe Pesci), he rises through the ranks to become Paulie's lieutenant; however, he quickly learns that, like his mentor Jimmy (Robert DeNiro), his ethnicity prevents him from ever becoming a "made guy," an actual member of the crime family. Soon he finds himself the target of both the feds and the mobsters, who feel that he has become a threat to their security with his reckless dealings. Goodfellas was rewarded with six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture; Pesci would walk away with Best Supporting Actor for his work. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

Once in a while, a film comes along that combines all the qualities that make a blockbuster classic.. " GoodFellas " is definitely one of these films, with a cast to die for, a storyline that combines just about everything. Drama, Horror, Romance, Action & Crime all rolled up into some of the most beautiful cinematography Hollywood has to offer. Martin Scorsese's abilities shine in this masterpiece of film engineering and this Blu-ray only highlights the sheer genius of this fine director. synopsis - Martin Scorsese explores the life of organized crime with his gritty, kinetic adaptation of Nicolas Pileggi’s best-selling Wiseguy, the true-life account of mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill. Video - Superb 1.85:1 aspect ratio 1080p/VC-1 encode on a BD-50 dual-layer disc. Colors are gorgeous, with lifelike clarity that looks amazingly true! This PQ is about as good as it gets and all will be pleased with this excellent picture. Audio - When GoodFellas was released on HD-DVD its audio was encoded using the Dolby Digital-Plus Lossy encode. Now on Blu-ray, we get a Digital Dolby 5.1 encode that is very good, but a DTS-HD Master audio track, would have been more proper. GoodFellas sound is encoded at 640kpbs bitrate with dialog sounding adequate, with the fronts & center being heavily used, since this is mainly a dialog driven soundtrack. Extras - 2 commentaries by Ray Liotta, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino and Frank Vincent, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, producers Irwin Winkler and Barbara De Fina, cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. - second commentary, dubbed "The Crook and The Cop." Henry Hill and FBI agent Edward McDonald - 29-minute "Getting Made" cast commentary, featuring new interviews with Liotta and Bracco - 8-minute "Workaday Gangster," which features a new interview with Hill on life as a mobster - "Paper is Cheaper Than Film" storyboard-to-film comparison, which features Scorsese's pencil-drawings of many of the key scenes in the film. GoodFellas is a masterpiece of Movie Making and hands down one of the all time best Mob films ever put to celluloid.. Martin Scorsese's fine direction and the combined talents of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta & Paul Sorvino have created a film for the ages!

Many books, articles, reviews, and essays have been posted or published about Goodfellas that all confirm one big thing: it's an absolute classic of modern cinema and one of the top 10 gangster movies ever made. Released many times on home video from VHS, to DVD, to special edition DVDs and blu-rays, The Goodfellas 25th anniversary edition finally brings us much closer to the way the film was meant to be seen and heard. Remastered from 35mm celluloid film source elements with supervision by director Martin Scorsese, the new version was scanned in 4k to bring tremendous amounts of new details to the digital realm then re-colored to match the original release and in addition had the sound re-mixed and upgraded to lossless DTS-HD surround sound. All this was done to pull you in closer to the world of Henry Hill, Tommy D, and Jimmy The Gent. Many of you who purchased Goodfellas on blu-ray years ago many already be happy with the way the movie looks and sounds but that version released in 2007 lacked HD sound and had technical issues with the video that limited the true colors and details of the image from being seen. This new version not only makes the image pop even more with better, natural colors and details and textures but it feels more like a movie shot on 35mm film should look. The best way to describe it is it feels like stepping back and seeing the movie being projected on 35mm but with the convenience of being on a digital HD disc. For those with big sound systems the lossless DTS-HD remastered track definitely puts your investment to good use by bringing to life lots more detail and clarity to the dialogue, classic music tracks, and expressionistic sound design and effects. Now all the scenes feel much bigger and again pull you closer to the world of Goodfellas. If you're a fan of the movie, do yourself a favor and pick up this classic that has been remastered with love and care and is priced very, very well!

    BluRay Does the Trick

Ray Liotta made a well deserved name for himself as an actor in this film directed by Marty Scorsese, and it is thrilling to see again on BluRay. In theaters this movie was never without its grain and dark areas, which survive in this print (BluRay.com gives its image 4 out of 5 stars) -- but that's not bad; this film looks crisp and sharp and every bit as good as the original theatrical release that shocked, excited and amused. Its so much better in blueray. The immortal and terrifying "You laughing at me? Then what are you laughing at?" scene with glinting eyes in pitch black darkness fully reveal the devilish delight of the actors is worth the price alone to get the bluray. A full surround track amplifies Muzzle flashes in the dark and headlights and full details on the period cars (often shown at night, when these guys are most active) make it all the more worthy.

After Goodfellas Blu-ray received a welcome upgrade for it’s 25th anniversary, it looked like a completely different movie, I was excited to see how the new UHD format would handle the 4K source that was created for the 25th upgrade. Unfortunately not very well. It’s watchable but the upgraded Blu-ray, included here, actually looks better. Blacks are too bright and often over power any detail during dark scenes. I also never noticed one instance of HDR or a wider color gamut than what the Blu-ray Disc had shown. The movie itself is essential to any video library but for the money I’d just get the Blu-ray.

this is a masterpiece by the legendary martin scorsese. this movie and the departed are his best movies without a doubt. goodfellas has a great cast and realistic mafia bosses and characters and joe pesci is one of the most vicious and evil people along side anthony hopkins as hannibal lector and javier bardem as anton chigurh from no country for old men. deniro is of course one of scorseses favorite actors-hes great in this. ray liotta does a really good job mainly because hes so unlikely to play this part. the story is all over the place dealing with drugs and killing people with an ending that will have you hating ray liotta. all the mafia stuff from the clothes to the accent is down perfectly because martin scorsese directed it. overall this is probably the best mafia movie along side godfather 1 and 2 and the departed.
