Nice hardware. Software is lacking.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the "apple" of digital thermostats and it's made by google (Nest's parent company). It looks great on the wall. Has a solid feel to it and comes across as very well crafted. It would've been nice to have been able to compare out old thermostat to this one to see exactly how much we're saving on our oil bill but we're definitely going through less oil than we used to. Installation was a breeze. I actually opened a chat with one of their reps to ask them a quick question about the unit and they pretty much insisted that they would stay connected with me until I completed the setup and tested everything out. The configuration is a breeze too - at least it was for our heat-only system. The major shortcoming is the software. There are some things that are just not intuitive like the eco settings and some things that just leave you scratching your head wondering what they were thinking when they wrote the code, like displaying what the target temp is more prominently than the current temp - there's a feature called farsight that will show you the current temp for a moment but then it goes back to the normal display. The usage history is capped to ten days. Seriously. Like how much memory would it take to give us a month or even a year, it's just some raw data that shouldn't take up much space at all on the device. The home/away feature works when it wants to. There have been times I've been like, "why is it freezing in here?" and opened the app to find the nest thinks I'm away from home and times when I've been out for hours and opened the app just for the heck of it to see if the furnace is running and it thinks I'm home and the heat's cranking. We've had two of these installed for a little over a month and it still hasn't learned our schedule. It might have something to do with not knowing whether we're home or away, lollll, but either of these features should be pretty easy to make work any number of ways and have them work well but they just don't. The app and web interface are nicely laid out and easy to use for the most part and from my experience with them, they seem to give you access to most of the controls and features that you'd have using the wheel on the thermostat itself, without having to stand there and scroll through everything with the notable exception of the farsight setting. From what I can tell, you can't link two nests in different zones and get them to act smarter together, for instance to say hey the furnace is running for zone two, why not heat up zone one for a little bit too while you're at it. Maybe I'm missing something and by all means tell me if I am, but that seems like it'd be a nice feature to have. It just feels really limited with what you can do with it and they've been out now for long enough where you think they'd have this thing feature packed with the ability to customize it a little more than what you get out of the box with this 3rd gen model. I feel like the ecobee is probably a more robust option but just barely. That being said we did get two of these and I'm pretty happy with them ..... I'm just not satisfied if that makes sense. There's just a lot more I'd like to see these things be able to do that hopefully will be added via firmware or software updates as more people install them and clamor for more features.

Love My Nest!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought the Nest Thermostat hoping to save some money on our energy bill. Installation was the easiest thing possible, anyone can figure it out (just make sure you have the proper power switch turned off and check the wires for activity) When we first installed it, I actually thought I installed it incorrectly because the data being collected was telling me my AC unit was running for a good 14-15hrs straight daily!!...called my heating and cooling guy to make sure A) I installed it right and B) that my AC unit was functioning properly. when he checked my AC unit it was low on refrigerant. He topped that off and BAM my data (on Eco mode) shows my unit MAYBE runs 45m to an hour a day and even at times no usage at all for days!!!. I LOVE LOVE having a visual aid to my furnace/AC usage!!! Now we will just have to wait and see what the winter will bring... This product was pretty pricey and I even considered getting my money back before installing it because of it's cost. BUT, reading reviews and seeing how this thermostat could save me so much more money in the long run I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did! I would highly recommend this product!!!

It’s very convenient to save energy when you’re away. Even if you’re traveling and on a trip. Worried about your home getting too cold in the Winter when you’re away? Works right from the app!

Nest - Learning Thermostat Smart AC for your home
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nest - Learning Thermostat - 3rd Generation is the ideal product for anyone who wants to improve the energy use and lower the electric bill in their home. The Nest Thermostat does a phenomenal job of: A. Cutting AC usage while still cooling/heating home B. Lowers energy usage C. Tracks energy usage and gives reports D. Learns from past usage E. Sets temp while user is away F. Cools/Heats home with 3 options of use (App, auto, and manual) In addition to all this the device is easy to install, learns from its users, and provides easy to understand data via email and app usage. This product can change the way you view AC units. For its price it will pay for itself in just a few months. The only CON is that when you first install it there will be a few hours where it will take time to heat or cool the house. Other than this it is the ideal smart AC unit.

Awesome Smart Product
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.*Buy any smart thermostat (CA) using local rebates! Made getting the smart thermostat worth it* Via local power company (PG&E, annd your local city Irrigation District etc. AND Golden State Rebates or whatever is offered by YOUR LOCAL legit state run programs. I got almost $125 off! Great item which goes along with all the smart products. As long as you take a picture of the wiring of old thermostat will be an easy install. Only had small trouble during synch to Google home when it wouldn’t read the QR code to start the connecting process. Overall really great product and looks sleek. Bought due to accidentally leaving a/c on all day using old standard thermostat. Switch to smart product, Numerous colors to choose from! Pros: -Easy access through app to control temps, -Savings using airwaves mode to keep house cool instead of using a/c -Stays connected to WiFi with no issues -Has learning mode to learn your schedule -$125 off via rebates - great Cons: -Turns off a/c when no activity is sensed passing thermostat (poss due to learning mode schedule) -initial set up with app (for me) was not connecting to Google home -connected via nest app which then popped up on Google home app

More than expected
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thermostat replaces a ten year old product that was cumbersome to program and not particularly flexible in its settings. The Nest was easy to swap in and connect to with the nest app. It also connects to Alexa. It offers so much more than I had realized when I purchased it. I like that it uses cell phones to determine if you are gone and adjusts heating temp for an unoccupied home. It can be controlled from the app and shows you the status of heating or cooling wherever you are. If you have been away for days and the house has gotten cold you can begin heating remotely so you return to a warm house. Of course it works for cooling too, providing the same energy saving benefit.

Does what I wanted
|Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Simple to install. Subjectively looks good. Easy to understand the controls and tracking. We only have heat so our options are limited as far as turning heat on and off but the UI is pretty impressive. If there is something I want to change its just there. Pretty much right were I thought it would be. Its really intuitive. I assume we will be able to track and control our usage to save some money but I cant say how much of a difference we've been able to achieve yet. Ive only had to circulate air occasionally since I purchased the device. Its a little pricey compared to some other options, but I would still recomend anyone in the market to consider it when comparing other smart thermostats.

Happy Customer
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My AC service tech recommended this unit and I'm glad that I bought it. This unit looks great and works even better. The directions were good but I also watched a couple of installation videos on YT just to be certain about the wire connections. All in, it's easy to get up and running. I really like how the unit learns your usage patterns and programs itself to replicate those patterns after several days of consistent use. In fact, it's done such a good job of "learning" that I hardly use the app anymore to control the temperature. It just works! If your on the fence... just buy one. And if you're like me you'll be glad that you did.

Q: Question2 story home, 1 thermostat, downstairs is always cooler than upstairs for the a/c and in the winter upstairs hotter than downstairs. Will NEST balance
Asked by notahandyguy.
- A:Answer If you have one unit controlling both upstairs and down stairs, you will continue to face this challenge. In order to balance both upstairs and down stairs, you will need a unit for the down stairs and a unit for the upstairs, each having their own separate thermostat.

Q: QuestionCan the Nest be used with a Heat Pump?We have a Heat Pump for heating and cooling, is that compatible with the Nest?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Yes. I have had a Nest controlling a heat pump with electric backup heat for two years now and it works fine.

Q: QuestionDoes this work with a 2 wire system?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer I have a 2 wire heating system and it works for me. When I checked using the compatibility tool it told me to take a picture of my wiring and send to customer support. I did and they verified it's compatible and told me which plugs to use in the nest
Answered by Vinodk
Q: QuestionDo i need 2 Nest Thermostat to control the 2 zones ? i currently have 2 thermostats controlling the temp separately upstairs and downstairs . Home size approx 2500 sq ft
Asked by oml.
- A:Answer The Nest works independently like your current thermostats in the home, and can only control whatever part of the system it's wired to. So if you currently have two thermostats, then you could choose to just replace one of them with a Nest, and keep the other one as a standard thermostat, or you could replace both each with a Nest. You can check for compatibility here: https://nest.com/support/article/How-to-tell-if-your-heating-and-cooling-system-will-work-with-the-Nest-Thermostat

Q: QuestionWhat if my wifi is not working but my power is on. Will the furnace and AC still heat and or cool?Sometimes my wifi just quits.. problem not mine but at the telephone company.. it might be down for an hour.. will I lose control of my heating or cooling or can I manually adjust what is necessary? There is not and issue with power... just wifi
Asked by Lilly of the Lake.
- A:Answer Yep the thermostat will function on its own without a connection...you just won't be able to access the remote features

Q: QuestionIf I am out of town, can I still control my thermostat on my phone? Is there a distance limit?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer As long as your Nest is connected to your WiFi, and your internet at home does not go out, you can control your thermostat from anywhere, even while out of town.
Answered by CraigN
Q: QuestionWill the Nest tell me if the power is on or off? Will the Nest tell me if the power is on or off?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Yes. When the unit is heating your house, the display will be a reddish-orange color. When the unit is cooling your house, the display will be blue. If the system is off, the background will be a dark grey or black color, with white numbers. It will even give you an estimated time until you reach your target temperature. If your house is at 66 degrees and you set the heat to 72, it will say "estimated 52 minutes to target temperature" or something like that, depending on the size of your house (information you can add to the thermostat as well).
Answered by BeatsMe
Q: QuestionWill it work with a heat only thermostat?
Asked by Yugo.
- A:Answer Yes it will. It can detect what you have once you plug it in. I have heat only and only have two wires coming in ( white and red). I have an oil furnace and baseboard/radiators. It works great!
