I love this Series!!! It's a great experience see again young Classic Villains of the Gothic City like Penguin, Mr Freeze, Riddle and others...

A Prequel Beyond All Others!!!
This television series is Genius!!! It's set in a slightly ambiguous period of time following the rise of young police detective James Gordon, and the machinations of a very somber and surly teenage Bruce Wayne. The root of all evil remains politics, religious frivolity, and greed. It resolves the goofier aspects of Gotham's criminals into personality quirks, and various psychological and physical traumas. Meta-humans have a theoretical reality, always on the verge of being discovered yet get overlooked because of egocentricity, emotional turmoil, and personal dramas. Like I said... genius!!!
Now... based on a few visual clues and story arc tidbits, it could be interpreted during the time frame of Bruce Wayne's early teenage years as part of the latest movie franchise series involving the Justice League, kicked off by 'Man of Steel' (2013) And 'Batman vs. Superman' (2016) and 'Suicide Squad' (2016).
There's much more going on here than what's being seen at face value. Words like... multiverse and crossover and alternate realities and paralleling universes, come to mind.

Great Series
Gotham is one of my favorite shows to watch. glad to have it as part of my personal collection. Look Forward to the final season.
