Hannah and Her Sisters [DVD] [1986]

Woody Allen once again stars and directs a great ensemble cast (including Michael Caine and Barbara Hershey) in 1986's Hannah and Her Sisters. MGM has done a nice job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, making sure that the colors are balanced and deep with black levels looking sharp. Edge enhancement is not present during the film, though there is a slight amount of dirt in a few key scenes. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono and is sufficient for the film it supports. Depth and fidelity are sorely lacking on this track, but otherwise the effects, dialogue, and music are all clear of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English, French, and Spanish subtitles, as well as Dolby 2.0 Mono tracks in both French and Spanish. Not unlike all the other Woody Allen discs released by MGM, Hannah and Her Sisters sports only a theatrical trailer as its sole extra feature. Overall, this edition of Hannah and Her Sisters is good, though certainly not great.

    Hannah and Her Sisters
A Woody Allen Manhattan mosaic, Hannah and Her Sisters concerns the lives, loves, and infidelities among a tightly-knit artistic clan. Hannah (Mia Farrow) regularly meets with her sisters Holly (Dianne Wiest) and Lee (Barbara Hershey) to discuss the week's events. It's what they don't always tell each other that forms the film's various subplots. Hannah is married to accountant and financial planner Elliot (Michael Caine), who carries a torch for Lee, who in turn lives with pompous Soho artist Frederick (Max Von Sydow). Meanwhile, Holly, a neurotic actress and eternal loser in love, dates TV producer Mickey (Allen), who used to be married to Hannah and spends most of the film convinced that he's about to die. Appearing in supporting parts are Lloyd Nolan and Maureen O'Sullivan (Farrow's real mom), as the eternally bickering husband-and-wife acting team who are the parents of Hannah and her sisters. The film begins and ends during the family's traditional Thanksgiving dinner, filmed in Farrow's actual New York apartment. Unbilled cameos are contributed by Sam Waterston as one of Wiest's brief amours and Tony Roberts as one of Allen's friends. Hannah and Her Sisters collected Oscars for Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, and Woody Allen's screenplay. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I am NOT a fan of Woody's. This is the ONLY film of his I have ever seen. Keeping in mind a "Star Wars" fan & collector has NOT gotten over “Annie Hall” beating "A New Hope Episode 4" at the 1978 "Academy Awards". Saw this in the 1980’s because I am a fan of Carrie's. It is a good film. Oscar winner. It is NOT the best film ever made, but it is interesting. NO extras but a trailer. Booklet inside is NOT good, just about Woody NOTHING about the other actors even after 2 of them won Oscars for the film. Just good to see the film wide screen. Once you get past Woody's Mickey characters just ignore that one & follow the stories of the other characters.

Only Woody Allen can deftly and seamlessly weave strands of comedy and pathos, which he does masterfully here.
