    Synopsis

    Highlander
With the ultimate throw-down -- "There can be only one" -- Highlander captured the imaginations of fantasy fans seeking a well-executed swordplay epic, becoming a cult classic in the process. Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) is one of a waning few survivors of a clan of immortals. The breed have been dueling each other for centuries in the quest to be the last one remaining, and hence achieve a supreme enlightenment that would be dangerous in the wrong hands. The immortals can only die by decapitation, so they hunt each other over the centuries and across continents to meet for each decisive duel, which will bring one of them a step closer to ultimate power. In present-day America, the troubled hero MacLeod lives a brooding and lonely existence, having lost his true love centuries ago. The evil Kurgan (Clancy Brown), an immortal who plans to use his power toward unspeakable ends, has fought MacLeod before but is still trying to finish him off. After emerging victorious from a parking garage skirmish with the third-to-last immortal, MacLeod knows that only Kurgan is left, and the two are on a collision path toward the inevitable. In the film's numerous flashbacks to the past, Sean Connery plays Ramirez, the immortal who first tutors MacLeod after the hero survives a mortal battle wound, prompting his fearful village to banish him. Roxanne Hart plays MacLeod's modern-day love interest, who tries to help him while struggling to believe his incredible story. The director's cut runs four minutes shorter. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

ighlander is a 1986 British-American epic adventure action fantasy film directed by Russell Mulcahy and based on a story by Gregory Widen. It stars Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Roxanne Hart. The film narrates the climax of an ages-old battle between immortal warriors, depicted through interwoven past- and present-day storylines. Christopher Lambert plays swordsman Connor MacLeod from Scottish Highlands, known as the Highlander, one of a number of immortal warriors, who can only be killed by decapitation. After initial training by another highly skilled immortal swordsman, the Spaniard Ramirez (Sean Connery), MacLeod lives on for several centuries, eventually settling in New York City, managing an antiques shop. In 1985, he falls in love with a policewoman named Brenda and finds out that he must face his biggest enemy, Clancy Brown's Kurgan, who wishes to kill MacLeod and to obtain "the Prize"—a special ability which is given to the last living immortal warrior, vast knowledge and the ability to enslave the entire human race.

Where is the Original U.S. Theatrical Version?

      Posted

'Highlander' is one of those films that is definitely an acquired taste, but its fan base knows who they are, and they really, really like the picture. Disagreement on final cut of the film between the producers and director led to several different versions of the film being released. I was a personal fan of the U.S. theatrical version (which is strangely absent from this dvd release), and while I too usually enjoy seeing director's cuts, this is one instance where the director was dead wrong in his decisons on certain scenes, and it shows. The U.S. Theatrical version of Highlander was a fun, fast, and mysterious type of film, while this Director's Cut really slows things down and adds in some really unnecessary extra footage. Bottom line, if you're going to release a dvd, at least give us the theatrical version too.

I bought this thinking it has extras that I didn't have in my original director's cut Blu-ray but it turns out it's the same exact thing the only thing that's different is the box is like a tin box with other type of artwork on as you can see from the picture other than that the movie is no different nor is the sound and there's no extra special features or anything that are exclusive to this or that are not already on the previous released version so save your money unless you want a different Blu-ray box.

The Blu-ray disc contained within is the same disc that's been available for several years, containing a solid if unspectacular transfer of the film and a director audio commentary track. The appeal of this Best Buy exclusive is the stylish, minimalist steelbook case which closely mirrors the design of the British steelbook Blu-ray release. Regrettably, this limited edition steelbook re-release does not include any interior-case artwork and does not include a digital copy of the movie, as most of the Best Buy exclusive Blu-ray steelbooks from Alliance Wave do.

This is a review for the early bluray transfer for 2009 and earlier editions. The one that I had picked up originally was a Steelbook edition. A pretty well done remaster overall with a touched up image - not a whole lot of extra's included on this particular version. If you're looking for a 'complete' edition, the 30th Anniversary Edition is the way to go. The movie itself is a fun romp and ultimate cult classic from the 80s. Think Sword/Sorcery in a Modern City setting. It gets goofy, but its a fun ride.

This is one of the nicest steelbooks on the market. Mondo makes high-quality steelbook art with transparent slipcases. It is great that Best Buy is selling mondo steelbooks, especially one for such a beloved film. This will make a perfect and inexpensive gift for any fan of Highlander. The blu-ray remaster of this film also looks quite nice, but the steelbook is the real highlight.

      Great Movie!

The movie is about Connor MacCleod who is immortal and can only die by having his head removed from his body. It has him starting off in the 80's and going through a series of flashbacks to give his background. It's strongest point I think is the villian. He is a big part of the flick. I always seen him as almost as overwhelming as Darth Vader in the Stars Wars movies but not as in control of himself. He is more primal which represents the savage era in time he came from.

I was extremely gratified by finding the Steelbook edition of the remastered copy of Highlander, a movie I have always enjoyed greatly. The picture quality is astounding for an older movie and the sound is amazing. I never tire of the line "there can be only one !". I plan to get the Steelbook editions of all my favorite movies when they come out. Blu-Ray is such an effective medium for viewing, along with the right television to view it on.
