Q: why isn't there a book on the key board that comes with the computer
A: In order to keep everything up to date and without errata and corrections most help functions and manuals have gone to online versions. Some are pdf books you can read or print out if you like the more tactile feel and the ability to literally thumb through the pages. As far as setting up your keyboard, this may even by available off-line on your computer, with upgrades coming via updates. Go to the Control Panel and get the help under the Keyboards heading. While in the Control Panel, you can also go to the Power settings to configure how you wish your Power Button to work. While there, if you have a laptop, you should be able to tell the computer what you want it to mean when you shut the laptop. Depending on your computer and operating system you can tell these to mean different things. Hibernate (not on most newer computers), Sleep, Shut Down, and Restart or Save and Restart are possible choices. Many today chose to let their computer sleep if you are going to have it plugged into power all or most of the time. Sleep never really turns off the computer. The monitor is shut down, but all or most of the programs are actively running or paused. People who like this setting find that it saves time because there is little "start-up" delay other than a security start-up screen asking for your password once you open up the laptop. If you do not have a laptop, you may assign a particular key or combination of keys to serve the same purpose when pressed. The disadvantage is that power is still being used and should there be a loss of power or the computer is no longer plugged in, the battery is in use and draining. Hibernate, if available, is much like sleep, but instead of using as much power, the webpages, programs, and documents, etc. are bookmarked and turned off. Less power is used in this state. When coming out of hibernation, the computer opens (or in the case of internet availability) or tries to open everything just as you left it. This takes longer for the computer to do awakening from sleep or more or less time than simply starting up, depending upon the programs etc. that were running at the time of hibernation. The advantage of hibernation is the computer cane resume where it left off with little or negligible power consumption during hibernation. If either of these are you default mode every day or so turning off the computer completely by selecting that option from the old style Windows pop-up bar or from the settings power side bar in Windows 8, is wise since only when shutting down and then being restarted will many needed updates be installed. If all of this is too much information or confusing to you. It would be best to find a computer savvy friend to walk you through this the first time you access help on your computer or online and establish the settings you desire. The store from which you purchased the computer may be able to do this for you in person or remotely via the internet. Call and ask them if you require assistance.
