      Great 2 in 1 for a student

Background: I am a high school senior entering my last semester. I wanted something that would support not only my online classes and MS Office, but also moderate web browsing (no gaming or photoshop). I upgraded from an Acer Chromebook that was awesome but limited to Chrome "OS." I received this yesterday, so this is based on a brand new machine. Review: This machine is perfect for what I'm looking for! It is heavier than expected (about the weight of an average textbook) but is just 11.6", meaning I can toss it in my backpack for school. It's aesthetically pretty; the metal lid and black keyboard make me feel way more sophisticated than I am. So far, I have installed MS Office 2016, which works quickly. I also installed Logos 7 Bible Software, which slows it down a little, but I expected the lag because of the program's size. Web browsing is speedy and Netflix loads fast and looks great (priorities). There was a decent amount of bloatware, mostly in the form of games, but it was easy to uninstall even for a Windows 10 newbie like me (although, disclaimer, I was raised by computer programmers and knew Python by age 8; I might be a little biased as to what's "easy"). Because I've been working off Chrome for two years, I still have not ventured into the realm of Edge (using IE at work has me weary of making the jump), but Chrome runs smoothly and even integrated well to the Win10 Mail app and Notifications. The 2 in 1 feature had me nervous, since I need a laptop and not a tablet, but it's been surprisingly pleasant. It autosenses when it's in tablet vs. laptop mode, but it asks before switching. The best way I can describe it is a touchscreen laptop with really flexible hinges; it's far from the HP TouchPad tablet I grew up with. Cortana is also a nice feature; she was easy to set up and seems to act much like the "Okay Google" on my phone. All in all, I'm very impressed and pleased by this machine, at least for the time being.

      Good basic work laptop.

I purchased this laptop in exchange for another 11-incher that had a god-awful keyboard design where the right shift key was too small and too far out from the home keys. While this may not look as posh as that other one, I am liking it so far. It's relatively lightweight and small enough to carry around effortlessly. The keyboard is nicely laid out, albeit a bit smaller than a traditional keyboard for obvious reasons. The screen seems to also be more responsive to touch than the other laptop. I have yet to try out the Windows Ink thing, but am planning on it. Battery life seems decent so far, and it's been a pleasure using it at work for basic typing, researching, etc. The screen could be a bit more vibrant but it's acceptable. The hinge seems to be a bit loose/flimsy, on mine at least, but maybe it's because of it being a convertible. It had a traditional hard disc drive, which made me think twice about purchasing it. Fortunately, even if it seems like it isn't user upgradeable, I was able to swap it out with a solid state drive. The battery is also easy to replace when that time comes. Unfortunately, upgrading the RAM seems a bit harder from what I saw when it was open. Overall, it's a pretty decent basic laptop for work and school. Had HP put 8 gb of RAM, a 128 gb ssd, a 1080 display with Win Ink, and a backlit keyboard on this 11-inch machine, I would've happily paid $500+ for it.

So far it's been fine. The touchpad started going out about 7 months in, and it slows down fast when you accumulate documents/pics etc. Not a good computer if you need to download important software. the slow-down was considerable after downloading the Microsoft Suite. I've uninstalled so many things to keep it running at a decent pace and I don't like that most programs have been converted to apps now. The tablet mode is kind of helpful but it makes me uncomfortable to have the keyboard exposed or to set it down on the keyboard. overall, i'm pretty disappointed. the cost for such minimal performance was way too high. examples of disappointing things:programs like Endnote and similar citation software continually crashes. The entire set-up encourages you to save things to the cloud and existing memory space is minimal. The battery cannot be removed to be replaced. it cannot run multiple programs at a time, and by that i mean it has significant slow-down when you try to use microsoft word and excel simaltaneously. Document recovery options are also very limited unless you're working in OneDrive. Pros: Very good battery life so far. very light and portable, touch screen is sensitive and works well. I have been using this computer for a year and for simple document/essay writing it has been fine. overall i've been very disappointed. I was in urgent need of a computer and this had the best reviews for a very portable work and school option, but the processing power is just too low and the memory is very poor. this has not been at all what i've come to expect from HP and the price was ridiculously high for such a shoddy product.

We were taking a trip to France and I didn't want to lug around my 17" I-7 laptop so I went out in search of something with space I could dump photos and videos on, as well as write. I also wanted something that would not leave me heartbroken and wallet broken if it got stolen or damaged. This was the perfect solution. This is NOT a power machine. With only 4GB of RAM I knew that going into it.I have a tendency to open a lot of windows and programs. As such, this gets a bit laggy sometimes. But nothing unbearable. While writing this I have 6 browser tabs open and 2 word docs (one of them about 40 pages long). No problem. I can easily blog, write and review photos. I haven't tried to use photoshop or Lightroom on here. I don't know it would handle the abuse. The smaller keyboard is taking some getting used to. I sometimes hit backslash instead of backspace. The touch screen is nice. The big drawback for me is the HP support assistant. It constantly popped up in the middle of my work. I finally got it to stop. OVERALL: If you are looking for an inexpensive device you can use Microsoft Office on, surf, blog, travel with, etc. this is a great solution. If I could go back and rethink my decision knowing what I know now, I would still buy this. Perfect for students and general users.

Spend more money to get something better

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

I really wanted to like this laptop. I am a writer, so I need an updated laptop for writing stories and doing research. I have a Dell that is about 6 years old. I am returning this laptop. It is very slow as other reviews have said. The HP isn't any faster than my old laptop. I mostly use Microsoft Word and surf the web. Both activities were relatively slow, and I'm relatively patient. I even tested the internet speed in various places with different servers and the lack of speed was the same. I actually prefer using my old 6-year old laptop. I will be returning this HP to the store. I guess I was expecting something so current to perform better. It just didn't perform the way you expect a "new" computer to. I was also a little leery getting the HP in the first place because they crash often. I think I'm going to try the Macbook Air. I don't normally spend that kind of money for a laptop, but I don't think I'm going to find a pc that has much to offer in comparison to price. I would only recommend this laptop for someone who has never used a computer before so that there aren't any expectations. 2 PROs: Awesome speakers. Fills up the room. Ease of typing on the keyboard

I always read these reviews but almost never write one. So here it goes. The machine responds very well, very easy to use. Battery life i would consider as very good. Consistently on for about 8 hours and had about 17% left. Decent size hard disk and for the work I’m doing with it processor is working well. Multiple windows open and no sign of slowing down or getting stuck. For the price I find it very difficult to the quality an HP machine gives. Not all are great, I do have a lemonade trying to get it working but this one is a great buy. I would recommend oh and it is my second one. I have people in the field and thinking about replacing the other 5 with this model. Very happy customer. Glad BB is still around and hope they don’t go away...

Great little laptop with cool features but can't use the drawing artist tool without spending addtl $80+ on their pen! Battery life is shorter than I thought it was going to be according to the specs.. But i think this is because after u shut it down it has a blinking red light on the side of the keyboard like somethings still running.. NO KEYBOARD BACKLIGHT! wanted to run slowly after 1st purchasing. I do like the size of this as well as how microsoft word products work on it but for $400+ you really aren't getting a good deal other than the size and sleek design and it's touch screen which is nice but it easily smears your fingerprints and has a glare! Nice in tablet mode very cool feature! Wish the video and camera options were better quality as well as the editing software. It does have a decent software to edit with but it's pretty basic and was hoping for more for the price tag! Overall I love my computer BUT think I'd love it more at a cheaper price or with better specs! Wouldn't recommend any other laptops over this one for the price range tho because they're too bulky and lack space.

      Not great

I just graduated high school and was looking for a small cheap 2 in 1 to take to college with me. This one seemed to fit the bill. So I bought it. I've had it for a week, and hopefully will be switching it out soon. First, I had problems with the wifi. Everything else in my house would be connected except my laptop. I could handle that though. It was annoying, but all I had to do was forget the network, unplug the router for about a minute, plug it back in and log into the network. It was annoying, but it worked. My dad tried to fix it, and restarted it a few times. This was on the third day. On the fourth day, I booted it up and a few minutes after I started using it, it froze. Now it freezes every time I boot it up. In addition, I bought a stylus for it. According to Best buy and the HP website the stylus should work on my laptop. Does it? Nope. If it does happen to register, it's way off and opens some random program. I'll be returning it soon, and hopefully the next one will work like a laptop should.
