This film takes place during the Great Depression when people were out of work all across the USA. The people in this film had to pick fruit off the trees to get one dollar a day. In the film, the pickers were originally supposed to get paid three dollars a day, but the employer decided to squeeze the people down to one dollar. This film shows how the employer treats his employees before the Unions. In the film, there is a full on conflict between the workers and owner of the fields. It is presented much like in the spirit of the movie" FIST" with Sylvester Stallone. The only problem I had with the film was the ending and that is why I took away one star from the rating. It ends on a point of hope, but leaves the watcher wondering if an impending fight took place or did they flee? I would have rather ended the film with a definite finale, instead of leaving the watcher hanging as to the ending. I would recommend to watch, but buying, only if you like struggles without an outcome.

In the 1930s, migrant workers from across the state took a stand against the power structure of California apple farms, hoping to get better working conditions. In a move organized by their Party leader, the ultimately tragic Jim Nolan, one group's strike would have a ripple effect on the labor movement, becoming larger than any one team of workers as they found themselves 'in dubious battle' against the landowners who oppressed them.

Grew up reading books authored by John Steinbeck and was always moved by them. "In Dubious Battle" is excellently done! Gave us insight into the struggles of those California field workers who had little and was challenged with the threat of even less.

This movie is a good depiction of labor-management struggles of the 1930's, when the issues were life and death.

What begins as a fight for rights turns into an all out battle for survival. A remarkable story of humanity.
