“In This Corner of the World” is directed by Sunao Katabuchi and based on the Japanese manga “Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni”, which has also seen a live-action tv miniseries adaptation as well there. It follows the time in the life of Suzu who moves away from her family in Hiroshima, to live with another she has married into, in Kure. As the war in the Pacific is drawn to the Imperial naval base there, life suddenly becomes full of harrowing experiences. Though it is a slow, “slice of life” drama, it’s period setting in Japan during World War II, makes it quite a life affirming one too. If you have appreciated Studio Ghibli’s “Grave of the Fireflies” from director Isao Takahata, this film may compliment it perfectly. The bonus mini manga, containing a section from the source manga, and special features, along with a low price, combine to make this a rewarding purchase to add to your film library. May it add enrichment to your life as well!

This anime won Japan's Best Anime of the Year, beating out "Your Name" and "A Silent Voice". The anime covers the life of a young Japanese bride during World War II. She marries a Naval administrator and moves to Kure, a naval port from Hiroshima. The anime details life as the war progresses. At first, life is normal but as the war progresses, there are food shortages, then citizens are drafted and then the allied bombing. There are injuries as well as family losses as the war continues. The anime has a pastel palette and the animation is more subdued compared to modern anime. My only complaint is that the subtitles are placed at the bottom of the screen whereas the theatrical movie had the subs placed in strategic locations reflecting its significance. Also, the subs appear to be simplified for easier reading and loses some details. At $12, this movie is an obvious recommended purchase for anime lovers.

This film is a unique look at Japanese civilian life during World War II and shows how war time affects the average person just trying to live their life they best they can. It's not revisionist or particularly patriotic; rather it seems authentic to the perspective of the characters. It looks *fantastic*, reminiscent of water color paintings; with a subdued soundtrack that fits the film. The Blu-Ray comes with a code to redeem which allows you to watch or download the movie through a service powered by Vimeo, which is a nice bonus, though I always prefer Ultraviolet when possible.

Truly a beautiful story that stirred so many different emotions while taking the viewer into a different place and time. I laughed and I cried as I was transported into the story. I would caution parents of younger children that some scenes of tragedy during war would be difficult for them to handle. This film seems to be geared for a more mature audience. The animation was nicely done as are so many Japanese films.

This movie was so wonderfully made and made me feel such a variety of emotions. I know there are a plethora anime based WWII films but this film has its' own interesting take and shows you more of the everyday life of life before the war. It's beautifully animated and any person who loved films such as Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen will LOVE this film.

When I got this Black Friday shopping I knew nothing about it. I looked up reviews and they seemed to be pretty good. Watched it and didn’t really like it. I was very disappointed. The story wasn’t that good. There’s a middle section of the movie that had some good interesting things but then it was boring again. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t good.

I liked this movie very much. The animation is clean and simple, yet the characters are infused with plenty of emotion. I found the story of a girl who makes the best out of critical circumstances, which are out of her control, very moving. Also, the love story beneath the main plot was touching. I definitely recommend this movie.
