Synopsis

John Carter
Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale of interplanetary adventure arrives on the big screen in this sweeping sci-fi spectacle marking the live-action debut of Oscar-winning director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, WALL-E). Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) was still haunted by the violence he witnessed on the battlefield when he inexplicably awoke on the distant planet of Barsoom (Mars). Upon learning that the inhabitants of Barsoom are bracing for a major conflict and that war appears inevitable, John finds out that love is a rare commodity on the Red Planet, and summons the courage to be the hero the Martians have been hoping for. Meanwhile, John falls under the spell of the enchanting Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), who struggles to suppress her compassion in a society known for its warlike ways. Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, and Mark Strong co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I went into the theater to see John Carter, knowing only that the guy who played Gambit in Wolverine Origins was in it. That’s about all I got out of the trailer. I went to an IMAX the first time. I noticed the score right off the bat. It was wonderful. When these weird guys with tattoos were fighting, I didn’t know if I would even like this movie. 3 creepy dudes came floating in and gave the only man left standing some sort of weapon. I kept an open mind. But suddenly there was the guy who played Gambit. I know now this is Taylor Kitsch and I suspended my disbelief and doubts and went for the ride. And what a ride it was. I loved the story. The themes of a reluctant hero haunted by tragedy , a stranger in a strange land with new abilities, and trying to figure just where in the world he was. As the movie progressed I saw loyal, friendship, honor, and doing the right thing for the right reasons. And the best was yet to come because there was an interplanetary love story that made me swoon. It was unabashedly romantic and such a treat. The ending was pitch perfect, making me long for more. I need to know what happens next to John Carter and Princess Dejah. I wanted to go back to Barsoom.

It's rare to find a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, this film tries to be little more than a good time, but it still manages to engage viewers. Some reviewers have complained that the plot is tired and has been done too many times to remain interesting. This is both true and false at the same time, The books upon which this film are based are old enough to have influenced a great deal of science fiction today, and also old enough that this film which I would have trouble considering anything but fantasy today was indeed a based on what seemed like plausible albeit fantastical science at the time. So while this film is unable to capture the imagination in the same way that a good bit of science based fiction such as star trek does it is a good fantasy film in its own right. Unfortunately this film was a box office disaster due to an overinflated budget and mediocre box office performance, so even though there is enough book material for 2 more films, this one is likely to go without sequel for the foreseeable future. The good news is that the colossal budget this film had shows up in the finished product. Overall this film isn't a bad way to send a couple of hours.

If you consider yourself to be a big sci-fi fan, John Carter is the movie for you. If you're like me then most of you sci-fi fans out there tend to compare sci-fi and fantasy movies to the big two: Star Wars and Star Trek. That being said John Carter takes to you to a whole new "universe” diversifying it substantially from the big two, thus leaving you wanting more. Examples would be Avatar, The Matrix and the Harry Potter films. All I can say is Disney shot themselves in the foot with under whelming movie trailers, a poor marketing campaign, and not to mention the worst possible title for a movie. Considering Disney originally planned to make a total of 3 movies, the other two being title Gods of Mars and Warlord of Mars . . . what were they thinking with this one? John Carter is a must see, too bad it wasn't titled: Immortals of Mars.

I absolutely love John Carter! It has been compared to other films but for me the movie experience was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. The story John Carter is based on is now 100 years old and it has inspired all of the most popular, well-known stories everyone knows and loves, like Star Wars, Avatar, Superman, Flash Gordon, I could go on and on. And yet, even though it has inspired so many things, it feels not quite like any of them. What the film accomplishes for me is a sense of wonderment, joy, and emotion. I saw the film 7 times in the theater and loved it more every time I saw it. I'm so impressed with the DVD extras and I know I'll enjoy watching the film with family and friends for years to come. My hope is that it will achieve cult classic status and that millions who didn't give the film a chance in theaters will realize how wonderful it is at home.

"John Carter," adapted from the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs tale, has become one of my all-time favorite movies. Writer/director Andrew Stanton ("Finding Nemo," "Toy Story 3") has put the exciting and emotionally charged story front and center. The special effects are superb but serve that story, rather than the other way around as in so many other films. The actors, both leads and the supporting cast, are charismatic. "John Carter" reveals a world to which you will want to return many times. First the film draws you with its great heart, and repeated viewings reward you with its depth.

Ok i'll keep this brief i saw this movie in the iIMAX in 3D TWICE! and it's very rare that i go to the same movie twice especially in the IMAX...Thats how great this movie is!. There is no way this deserved any bad reviews yet somehow through the power of mass ignorance it got them. still shaking my head over that one i think maybe some of those critics didn't even watch the movie...this movie has great production value a fantasic cast with some of my favorie actors in it. and a timeless inspiring story somewhat similar to avatar but that is a good thing since that was also a great movie. in my opinion do not believe what some critics have said about this movie because they are dead wrong! it is one of the very best movies of 2012. and it has beautiful lynn collins and the great brian cranston in it!

What's up with the John Carter title?! I love this film, don't get me wrong, but this title is just about the lamest one I've ever heard… well, that and Batman Begins. The perfect title for this film would've been Barsoom. Anyways, the film is still amazing despite the horrible title (yes, I feel that strongly about it LOL). The other thing the upsets me is why Disney failed to market this film properly. Despite all the mix reviews, I honestly feel that this was a solid film, and I'm the biggest critic I know, ask my friends, they can't stand hearing me talk smack about a film afterwards. This film was obviously made with the intention of a trilogy, and rightfully deserves it. The film had magic, romance, action, comedy, everything for everyone. Yet, it did poorly in the box office. I blame it on marketing, I had no idea this film was coming out until i overheard a group of kids talking about the film. This is a must watch film, but be warn there are no plans to make a sequel, and after watching this film you'll be praying for one.
