    Synopsis

Season one of the animated series Justice League opens with the three-part "Secret Origins," which explains the reason that the League is formed and establishes the principal players. Duped into disarming the Earth's warheads, veteran superhero Superman is aghast when a fleet of bug-like space aliens attacks the Earth, led on by the traitorous Senator J. Allen Carter. Flying to the orbiting space-station headquarters of Batman, Superman and his fellow crime-fighter try to mount a strong defense against the extraterrestrials, only to discover that it is too much of a job for just the two of them. Thus is formed the mighty Justice League, comprised of Superman and Batman's comic-book confreres the Green Lantern, the Flash, Wonder Woman, and Hawkgirl -- with added backup from a new member of the gang, the telepathic, shape-shifting Martian Manhunter (aka J'onn J'onnz). Once the alien insects are thwarted, the Justice League embarks upon several new adventures, most of them unfolding in two-part story arcs. Though the League members are united in a common cause, there is a certain amount of friction, rivalry, and envy amongst them -- just like any "normal" exclusive club. Featured in the series' 26 are a number of characters who will be familiar to any fan of the original Justice League comic-book line, including underwater superhero Aquaman; Wonder Woman's mother, Hippolyta, and erstwhile boyfriend Steve Trevor; black crime-fighter Virgil "Static Shock" Hawkins; and Sgt. Rock (of Easy Company). Several infamous villains also make appearances, among them Superman's perennial nemesis Lex Luthor (who at one point organizes a rival team of bad guys called The Injustice Guild), Batman's longtime enemy the Joker, and such reprehensible reprobates as Brainiac, Mordred, Star Sapphire, the Shade, and the simian criminal genius Grodd. The season ends with the three-part adventure "The Savage Time," wherein six Justice League members are transported back to D-day during World War 2!

High above the Earth in the great Watchtower of the Justice League, there are assembled the world's seven greatest heroes created from the cosmic legends of the universe - Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, the Flash, Green Lantern, the Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl. Their mission: To fight injustice, to right that which is wrong, and to serve all mankind. It was planetary pandemonium for animation fans when the creators of "Batman: The Animated Series" unveiled the monster hit series "Justice League" back in 2001. Taking the premise of Hanna-Barbera's classic "Superfriends" [of uniting heroes to fight evil on a global scale as originally done in the comic books] and giving it a 21st century upgrade, the show's producers boldly took the time to flesh out the members of the League, adding a depth to what motivates them as heroes. This was never done with the Justice League of the 60s, 70s & 80s. Justice League featured Emmy-worthy production values in animated storytelling and brilliant thought and care in voice casting. Not to mention a magnificent main title theme by Lolita Ritmanis. Given the show's mature tone, fans were dumbfounded that DVDs of Justice League were only released as single disc "DC Comics Kids Collection" volumes with no more than 3-4 eps instead of season sets. (Note: If you own all of the original JL volumes then you already have Justice League - Season One episodes 1-15, and should consider the remaining 11 episodes plus the exclusive EXTRAS on this set before deciding.)

...as I have said in previous reviews regarding the animated "Justice League" movies, I really wish Warner Bros. / DC Comics would have put all of these kid-friendly Justice League movies in with the animated series set. As you watch the series, different episodes touch on the events in these separate "movies", and without the backstory, the narrative and dramatic impact can get lost. Still, these standalone movies are great!

Being a mom that's wild about comics, I wanted to show my 4 year something that would hopefully get him involved and interested. Justice League was a great introduction into the world of DC Comics. The movie tells the origins of the Justice League and is wonderful visually. The story was fast paced and filled with lots of action that had him cheering. He loves this cartoon and we will purchase the rest of the series.

This was a series that provided quality storylines and well developed characters. It is far superior to most of the current cartoon series. This was not a series whose sole purpose was to sell me a line of toys as a child. The DVDs look and sound great. I am looking forward to watching the series with my sons.

This is a fun DC cartoon series, the characters are light hearted and do silly things. If your looking for a little more serious DC cartoon, this is not it, but it is still really enjoyable.

These cartoons are the ones I grew up on when I was a boy. Not too violent and always some loose positive theme was involved like teamwork or integrity or kindness. Now I can enjoy these same cartoons with my young son.

Good follow up to the classic animated series with some essential voice actors (Kevin Conroy as Batman) returning. Second part to season 1 is lots of fun and great for kids.
