We installed the KDTM354ESS in a new lake home last fall. We didn't get to use it much at the end of the season, but focused on it in April and proved to ourselves that it was cancelling in mid cycle and waking up all by itself when no one was anywhere near it...cancel and drain or some other cycle. We contacted KitchenAid and had 5 (so far) warranty repair calls with no luck. After the 5th visit, I just bought a brand new unit from BB thinking our first unit was a lemon and it was time to just put it on the curb, so to speak. I picked up the new dishwasher...same exact model...from Best Buy last Friday and installed it. There was some minor mechanical damage to the frame when I inspected it, but it was no visible externally and I didn't think it would affect performance so I installed it and tested it out. After 5 days of testing, this one is going back to Best Buy. It starts up by itself and cancels out by itself. Something is screwy. It passes all of the diagnostic tests, but doesn't work in real life. I don't know what's wrong with this model, but I won't buy a third one. We will move to some other brand. Too bad since we have other KitchenAid dishwashers and have had good luck with them.

      Exceptionally quiet

      • My Best Buy® MemberMember

This is my second dishwasher in a month. The first dishwasher was installed but holes for the handle had been misdrilled so the handle would not fit. A month later they bring a brand new dishwasher and everything works just fine. The first dishwasher was so quiet I literally had to go stand next to it and put my ear close to it to be sure it was running. This second one seems to be a bit louder but still very quiet. Also the second unit did not have the small utensil basket included so I grabbed the one out of the old unit before they took it away. All of this leads me to believe KitchenAid has a bit of a quality control program at the factory. Otherwise I am very satisfied with the performance of the dishwasher. It has a nice range of wash and dry options to meet just about any need. I really like the sanitize option as that is one of the reasons for using a dishwasher. Plus I can put my contact lens cases in there and keep them nice and sanitary. If I had one quibble it is that these new dishwashers don't hold as many dishes as my 30 year old GE unit. But I only manage to use enough dishes to run the dishwasher about once a week so it really is not that much of a problem for me. If you have a full four place setting to wash it will be hard to fit in all of the bowls and cups and pots and pans and odds and ends in one load.

      A differing opinion

Not sure why we came away with such a different opinion than most here, but we wound up exchanging this for a Bosch that we have found far superior in every way. I wanted to like this KitchenAid and argued against my wife's complaints at first, but eventually had to give in. Despite the claims of additional room, we found that we needed to raise the upper rack to the top setting to accommodate our dinner plates (which are perhaps slightly larger than most, but certainly nothing extraordinary), and this prevented taller glasses from fitting on top. We also often found it difficult to load a large quantity of dishes. If we happened to have the right mix, then we could load it up well, but if we had, say, mostly dinner dishes, we wound up with a lot of wasted space. Larger (but not enormous) cutting boards and bowls proved very difficult to fit in efficiently. Finally, the silverware basket was unnecessarily large and we would have preferred more space for dishes. Cleaning-wise it was fine, but we found the pot/casserole scrubber could only accomplish so much, and ultimately did not save us from having to wash those items by hand. So when all was said and done, we had an attractive, very quiet, ok performing dishwasher that was just way too much of a pain when it came to loading it up.

The first dishwasher came on 11/6 and as they were unpacking it from the truck the guy noticed it was damaged, so back it went. Second one came on Thursday, 11/9 and the install went seamlessly, the guys were great and fast. So Saturday I run my first load (I never run a partial load) and after 2 1/2 hours the dishes are still dirty. I run a second time (this time on quick cycle) and dishes are still dirty. I contact Best Buy and they put me through to Geek Squad who tell me the soonest someone can come out and look at it is 11/22 (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). I tell them that is unacceptable. I paid $900 for a NEW dishwasher - not a dishwasher that needs to be repaired. They tell me it's the best they can do but I can contact the store. I call the store and some woman in the appliance department REFUSES to let me speak to a manager because I purchased the DW online even though it came from their store. I call Geek Squad back and get someone new who knows their stuff and she sets me up to have the old unit removed and a new one installed on 11/21 (two days before Thanksgiving). If this one doesn't work it's going back and I'll go somewhere else where they know how to treat a customer. NOT IMPRESSED BEST BUY!

This is an exceptional dishwasher. The unit is so quiet that you often wonder if it is running, however there is a nice LED on the front that lets you know what is going on (blue=washing, red=drying, white=clean). Really, it is difficult to hear when you are next to the unit! I really like the top rack. I have tall 'protein mixer' cups and with the vertical adjustment capability on the top shelf, they fit with no problem. There is a great filter and grinder motor at the bottom of the unit that quickly dispatches chunks. The interior stainless steal tub is a nice touch too. Although there are no controls on the front, there is a nice timer on the top of the door, showing time remaining in the cycle. I thought this would not be be visible, but you can see it just fine at any reasonable angle. There are many cycles and drying options to choose from. I also have to tip my hat to the Best Buy installation team. They did a completely professional job and made sure that all hoses and hook-ups used new, reinforced parts.

Best Buy-Unable to ServiceThis High-End Appliance

I have no reference point as to whether this appliance is worthy of the price. I received my brand new appliance at the end of June 2016 and it broke after two cycles (water would not drain). The pump failed. New pump shipped to my home was defective. Repair attempt was on July 18th. They were to have a pump 2nd-day air shipped to my home. Since then I have not received a pump and just spent (Aug 2nd) 30 min (wait time estimated at six min) waiting for a rep to tell me the pump was ordered, but not shipped yet and I would have to call back when I got it to reschedule repair. No estimated dates could be given as to when to expect it. I asked to speak to a Manager and was told they would call me back. So much for spending $150 on a protection plan. I would have been better off buying from a business that specializes in high-end appliances.

      Good Dishwasher

I'd say overall we've been pleased with the dishwasher. It is very quiet and it has great features to insure that your dishes are clean no matter how dirty they are. It is not difficult to use whatsoever. The only "negative" I'd give the dishwasher is that it is smaller internally than our previous dishwasher...meaning it doesn't hold as many dishes as our other dishwasher and I have to run it more frequently. I would not say that it is a big problem for us since we needed a dishwasher that would fit properly into the designated space in our kitchen and the performance of this dishwasher is far better than the performance of our last one. The installer was great and very professional and polite in explaining the installation and answering any questions we had. If possible, my recommendation is to wait for a sale before buying. We saved about $200 on it by waiting for a Black Friday sale to purchase.

Dishwasher had a dent in the top edge of the stainless steel door, uncovered when unpacked from the shipping packaging. Since the old dishwasher had already been removed, the installing Geeks---with my agreement---installed the damaged machine, so we would have the use of the dishwasher while a settlement decision was reached with Best Buy. In the end, the Geeks brought a brand new identical--except undamaged--dishwasher, pulled the damaged one out, and installed the new one. The damage appears to have happened at the factory, before packaging for shipment, as the packaging showed no indications of damage. According to the Geeks, it would be taken back, possibly to be sold as "open box"/"scratch and dent" merchandise. It was unfortunate for the problem to have happened, but Best Buy handled it professionally and to their customer's satisfaction.
