Lady Terminator [DVD] [1989]

For movie lovers who prefer that their entertainment come with a healthy dose of the outrageous and unexpected, it just doesn't get much better than Mondo Macabro. As if bringing such little-seen exploitation gems as Dangerous Seductress and Aswang to DVD wasn't enough, Mondo Macabro continues to consistently impress by packing their releases full of fun and informative bonus materials -- and their release of Lady Terminator is no exception. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is pretty solid despite some notable artifacting in the darker scenes and an occasional softness. To deride Mondo Macabro for a few minor image issues after all of their efforts to bring such bizarre gems to DVD really would be unfair, and with the inclusion here of not only an anamorphic transfer but some truly insightful bonus materials, the good certainly outweighs the bad. Audio is presented in English Dolby Digital Stereo and offers a clean mix of vocals, endless gunfire, and a classic '80s synth soundtrack. For those who might be interested in learning a bit more about Indonesian exploitation, Mondo Macabro has also included an insightful documentary featuring interviews with some of the region's best-known filmmakers. In addition to exploring the Indonesian film boom of the 1980s, this featurette also reveals the myths and legends that influenced the features and offers extensive interviews with director H. Tjut Djalil, Parkit Films producer Raam Punjabi, and The Warrior star Barry Prima. Text pages go into even greater detail by discussing not only the history of Indonesian horror and exploitation, but by also detailing the "Legend of the South Sea Queen" -- the mythical inspiration for Lady Terminator. A stills gallery details the international advertising campaign (offering posters under the alternate title Nasty Hunter), and alternate scenes offer less explicit takes that were shot to ensure successful export to less permissive regions. In addition to a trailer and previews for other Mondo Macabro releases, Lady Terminator also includes a filmography for director Djalil.

Synopsis

Lady Terminator
In 1889, the vicious "Queen of the South Sea" collects men that she murders during sex, thanks to a magical eel that lives inside of her vagina and bites the penises off of those who can't satisfy her lust. Finally, one man pleasures her long enough to reach inside and pull out the creature, which instantly turns into a dagger. Furious, the Queen vows that she'll take her revenge on the man's great-granddaughter, and goes into the sea to wait for one hundred years. A century passes, and Tania, a plucky anthropologist, finds an ancient book on the legend of the Queen and decides to investigate. She charters a boat to take her to the area where the Queen is believed to have disappeared, but while skindiving, a tidal wave destroys the vessel and Tania suddenly finds herself tied to a bed in a mysterious room. When a mystical eel enters her, she is possessed by the spirit of the bloodthirsty Queen. After killing a pair of drunken punks in a lascivious manner, she sees the image of Erika, a pop singer, on television and recognizes her as the descendant of the man the Queen vowed revenge on a century before. Armed with machine guns and impervious to bullets, the female assassin starts cutting a bloody swath through the city in an attempt to murder Erika, taking out scores of innocent bystanders, policemen and soldiers on her way. Erika's only hope is to recover the magic dagger that her great-grandfather has bequeathed to her for just this sort of emergency. ~ Fred Beldin, Rovi
