Let me start by saying up front that I have a minor hearing issue. I've got about 85% in my left ear and about 15% in my right ear. With that being said, my right ear is really only good for picking up bass. LOL. I've used a specific bluetooth speaker for the past 5+ years and I still LOVE it. At the time I bought it, it retailed for $200.00 and is still to this day one of the best sounding bluetooth speakers I've ever heard. However, this Lifeproof Aquaphonics, for being their bottom-tiered model is AMAZING! I do what I always do when testing a new bluetooth speaker for the first time. I check vocal tones and treble through my most-used app, Twitch. With the streamers voice, game audio, music and such, it's almost the best of both worlds for testing purposes. While this gets nowhere near as loud as my go-to speaker, I don't expect it to. However, it's current volume is great for how this is designed and for the small size. It passed the Twitch test great. So, I moved on to listening to music in Spotify. I listen to a lot of electronic style music (Infected Mushroom, Daft Punk, etc) and it sounds great there as well! This gets almost as loud at 3/4 volume as my other one does at 1/4 volume, which is saying a lot. My only nitpick with this, if I had one, is that it could use a little more bass. My wife tested it with some of her music (consisting of mostly current radio hits, lol) and she was really impressed, although she also noted the minor lack of bass as well. The packaging is really nice and makes you really feel like you got something for your money. However, there was little in the way of instructions. Physically, my main concern with wear/tear on this device is in the charge port cover. Pulling it off of the port, which is attached by a sliver of rubber going to the inside, can be a little tricky. I was worried I was actually going to tear the rubber hinge while getting the charging cable plugged in. Also, the bluetooth button always stays lit and flashing while in use. I've not figured out a way to stop it. Not sure if it's continuously searching/pairing or what is going on - it's not really outlined in the manual that I could find. Outside of this, controls are easy and self explanatory and this thing really feels heavy-duty, like it can take a beating. For the price, I'd definitely give this two thumbs up and would even recommend it to others, especially if you are the outdoors type (pool parties, camping, whatever). It even has a built in hinge that you can use to hang it onto things, maybe even attach to a bike. It's designed to be very mobile and easy to handle.

I like some of the design elements like the illuminated icons but I think the built-in carabiner is fragile. It has good water resistance protection but average sound quality. It can’t be paired with other units to support stereo or “party” mode. It is a nice speaker but costs twice as much as it should. Pros: IPX7 water resistance (doesn’t float). Protected against short durations of (fresh) water immersion. Max immersion for less than 30 minutes at a depth of less than 1 meter. Rinse with fresh water after exposure to salty, soapy or chlorine water. Bottom and back sides have a slightly raised rubberized lip that keeps it from sliding. Illuminated icons on the buttons. The bluetooth button light slowly pulses on and off while in use making it easy to locate in the dark. Tapping any of the control buttons will illuminate all of them for about 4 seconds making it easy to tell which button is which. You can tell them apart by feel after using it a short time but the illuminated icons are a nice touch. Battery level indicator lights. Tapping the power button will light up 1-4 indicator dots to show the level of battery remaining. Control lock. There is a small lever that can be rotated between lock and unlock positions which also illuminates small locked/unlocked icons. When the unit is off the controls can be locked to prevent accidentally powering on. Locking the controls while it is in use will prevent all the buttons from working including the power button. Decent bluetooth range. The range seems as good as my other small bluetooth speakers and earbuds. Speakerphone functionality with built in microphone. User interface tones are helpful. Power on/off tones. Bluetooth pairing/connection status tones. Max volume tone. Ringtone when receiving a call. Cons: Sound isn’t the greatest, certainly lacks bass. It doesn’t sound terrible but for $100 I expect more. You could pay half the price for other speakers and have the same or better sound. The Sony XB10 sounds much better at half the price although it is only IPX5 water resistant. The JBL Clip 2 is also half the price with IPX7 rating. Cannot be paired with another LifeProof speaker for “party” mode or stereo sound. I could be wrong but I don’t think so because there is NO mention of that functionality on the included documentation, the packaging or their website. There is also no button/light that suggests is supports that feature. Speakers that cost half as much support this functionality. Carabiner lock mechanism seems fragile. The carabiner arm is spring loaded so it opens when unlatched which is nice feature -until the latch breaks. Then it would be annoying with no way to keep it closed. I prefer the design of the JBL Clip 2 with a built in “loop” that can accept the included carabiner or practically any other carabiner, cord, tie, whatever. After it is submerged in water it takes quite some time to get all the water out of the unit. The carabiner pivot/hinge as well as the latch mechinism seem to hold most of that water. Even after vigorous shaking and drying on my counter for a full day I can shake it and still get a fine spray of water flying out of the carabiner hinge.

The Lifeproof AQ9 portable speaker works fairly well . . . when you can get it to work. I had the worst time trying to get this device to pair with anything. It took me six attempts across two days to get this to pair with my Android smartphone (a relatively recent model running Bluetooth 4.0). The first four attempts my smartphone couldn’t even see the speaker. The fifth attempt (the next day) it saw the speaker, but I got an error about an invalid pin. The sixth attempt, I got an error about an invalid pin; but it suddenly connected anyway. It took me two attempts to get this to pair with my older Android tablet (with the pin error on my first attempt and no error on my second). The difficulties that I faced are ironic given the fact that the device touts itself as being able to connect to up to 8 devices. Once connected, my devices don’t seem to have any problem finding the speaker again. Sound quality is “meh.” The volume is fair, but the sound seems to be missing quite a bit in the mid ranges. For the most part, music sound tinny. But when you get to a part of a song with a lot of bass, the bass kicks in pretty strongly (just for the duration of that part though). There is no middle ground. The bass is either going strong or not at all. Connection range is good. I had my phone at the opposite end of my one bedroom apartment, and the speaker played without buffering or distortion. The clip is a nice touch, but the speaker’s size renders it somewhat awkward. It’s too big to casually stuff into a pocket or have dangling from a backpack (in my opinion). It’s just a little smaller than a handheld cassette player from the ‘80s-‘90s. If you're in a dorm room or camping, and space is an issue, this speaker could be a good fit for you as a compact desktop speaker. For my needs though, its size hampers its portability. The device may be water and shock resistant, but you should expect it to show wear. The exterior is (mostly) a hard stiff plastic that looks like it will scuff fairly easily. Individual elements like the charging port cover and buttons are rubberized and will likely hold up better. All in all, I’m afraid that I wasn’t terribly impressed with this speaker. With a little more work to refine the design and fix the connectivity issues, this could be a good concept. As it stands, it's not quite ready yet.

This speaker from LifeProof really lives up to it's name. The solid build paired with surprising sound makes this a great speaker for those wanting to bring some music with them on the trails, to the beach, by the pool, etc. PROS: Build - I think this goes without saying that if you are looking into this speaker, the chances are you are interested in it's durability. For those purposes, it ABSOLUTELY delivers. The water, dust, and drop resistance makes bringing this speaker WHEREVER worry-free. One of the features that I have been most pleasently surprised by is the caribiner-style clip. It has a decent size opening for attaching to a backpack, inside a tent, etc. and locks closed so you dont have to worry about it accidentally opening. Battery life/ portability: The other things to consider when researching outdoor speakers are battery life and portability. In both of these areas, the speaker delivers very well. I have not done a full battery test but have no problems assuming that I will easily get close to the 16 hour limit. This speaker is also very light weight and has a small enough form factor that I wouldn't hesitate to throw it in (or clip it on) any bag I bring. CONS Sound - I struggled with calling this out in my review as many seem to have handicapped the sound significantly considering the size/ rugged build but to me, it has to be mentioned. The sound is just not full and rich enough for me personally. I understand that you can't expect full bass from such a small speaker, but it just seems to leave something to be desired, particularly from the lower end. As you can tell it wasn't enough for me to lower my overall rating considering the target market, but I certainly won't be using it in any situation where form factor and durability are not considerations for speaker choice. Overall, I would highly reccomend this speaker to anyone who wants to bring a speaker along on their outdoor adventures.

LifeProof - Aquaphonics AQ9 Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Obsidian sand OK this is the smallest of the Aquaphonics, and doesn’t have the storage compartment and all that. This works just fine for me, and it is compact, lightweight, and has a secure large-loop clip to hook it on a chair or table leg. Don’t expect audiophile-quality sound from this small a speaker, but that’s not what it is for. Sound quality is not such a big issue at the pool, you want to be able to hear the music and not have to worry about your speaker getting wet. This one does exactly those things. The sound is loud enough for the family to hear, not so darn loud that people across the pool give you the stink-eye, and easy to use the waterproof buttons to change the music or skip a few songs on the playlist. Bluetooth pairing took just a few seconds with the phone, and wife, son, and myself all have paired up and the speaker has no problem picking up the active device. Can’t say exactly how long the charge lasts, as it hasn’t run out of juice during several outings – so seems to be an “all day” device. Charging takes several hours, but seems to charge OK from the car power outlet to give it a boost or re-charge while on the road. There are a lot of these types of speakers all over the internet, and maybe one that sounds as good for a little less… but who has time to do intensive research for everything you buy? This one works for me. Overall, a good device for it’s intended purpose, hearing those “pool party” songs without having to worry about the weather or the water – while pretty much lasting the whole day on a charge. The large-loop clip is an extra bonus to keep it from walking away if someone admires it a bit too much when your head is turned. Kind of hard to walk away with the speaker playing in your hand, but you never know…

The LifeProof - Aquaphonics AQ9 Portable Bluetooth Speaker is well designed and made to handle some tough situations that other speakers will not stand up to. I can see hiking with it and the sound quality is great although compared to the Wonderboom it has less bass. However the Wonderboom is round (cylinder) shaped and would not be as convenient to carry around. This speaker comes with a built in carabineer that can lock around a belt loop or hang from a backpack. The syncing process is typical of the new wave of Bluetooth devices and is very easy and intuitive. I paired it with my PC and could play YouTube or iTunes nicely. Of course it takes the place of your computer speakers. When I clicked on the speaker icon I could switch between the PC and this device and this little speaker was far better than the JBL speakers on my AIO. I also easily paired it to my Android cell phone and it was terrific with Google's PLAY Music. It has just the right amount of operation buttons including power on/off which is nicely accompanied by sounds. You can also raise and lower volume and pause or skip tracks. There seems to be a gap in online documents as there is no manual as promised in the one page sheet included but you don't need a manual. A very nice feature is a lock/unlock which disables the function buttons and this is nice so you can hike or stroll on the beach and not accidently change anything. I think this product is a winner and for those who don't want or need to wear headphones it sure makes the music come alive compared to a computer or cell phone speaker. It comes with a cable to charge via a USB charger or from the computer. Love it.

Boy does this speaker put out some big, solid sound. With the volume turned up to its highest level, music plays so loud and clear, you'd swear you were listening to a full-sized (more expensive) speaker system. The controls are simple enough to use, which is good, considering all you get by way of instructions, is a very basic card included with the device. There is, however, an online PDF user guide you can refer to for somewhat more detailed information. Pairing this speaker to my devices, was smooth and easy. The quality of voice calls through the speaker seemed to me to be a bit lacking, but I was still able to carry on a decent conversation, and was told I could be heard quite clearly. In my view, the carabiner clips shut sufficiently, and I feel relatively certain it wouldn't just come unclipped by being jostled about. The size of the device itself is small and light enough to even be attached to a belt loop, for your own personal portable speaker. Oh, and the control buttons light up when you push them. That's a fun, cool feature, too. Now, onto the waterproof test... Yep, it can be submerged and still work. Tried that out in my bathroom sink. So, if you happen to accidentally drop this in the pool, in the lake, or in the ... toilet ... you're gonna be fine. And so will this Lifeproof speaker. ;) Just remember to gently shake out the leftover water from the spot where the carabiner clips closed. The Aquaphonics AQ9 doesn't only have to be used for those outings where you might run the risk of dirt, droppage, or water damage. Just stand this little speaker up on a flat solid surface, and enjoy, anytime.
