Looker [DVD] [1981]

Warner has rescued a catalog favorite from video oblivion with this DVD of Looker. The widescreen, anamorphic video transfer looks excellent, offering rich colors and a finely detailed image that is miles ahead of the television and VHS versions of this title. The Dolby 2.0 Stereo mix is fairly basic but it does use Barry DeVorzon's hypnotic, synthesizer-shaded score to good effect. The disc also offers a few noteworthy extras: there is a video introduction by Michael Crichton, a full-length commentary track by Crichton and a theatrical trailer. Of these extras, the most satisfying is the commentary track: Crichton offers a steady, relaxed stream of comments that detail what inspired the film, the circumstances behind its making and some interesting self-analysis of his choices and obsessions as a writer/director. It's fascinating stuff for anyone with a serious interest in Hollywood filmmaking. To sum up, the combination of quality transfer and a strong commentary make this disc of Looker a must for fans and well worth checking out for anyone interested in the film.

This fun, silly thriller written and directed by Michael Crichton manages to combine the dramatic murders of beautiful models, a secret conspiracy to use TV commercials for mind-control, and an unusual seeing-eye device which makes the wearer invisible. Plastic surgeon Larry Roberts (Albert Finney) becomes the prime suspect after two models on whom he operated are killed. Larry becomes suspicious because both of the women came into his office asking for very precise and seemingly unnecessary physical alterations. Agreeing to operate, because the women's jobs depended on the surgery, Larry must now clear his own name and save his life and career. With the aid of a friend and model Cindy (Susan Dey), Larry discovers and foils the plot led by corporation-head John Reston (James Coburn). Larry must then fight for his life against Reston's thugs who are equipped with the devices, called "Lookers." This is good, if silly fun and Albert Finney does his best with a somewhat implausible script. ~ Linda Rasmussen, Rovi
