Synopsis

Mad Monster Party
The only theatrical feature from Rankin/Bass -- the outfit behind countless animated holiday TV specials including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman -- this quaint and colorful production pays amusing homage to nearly every movie monster in Universal's catalog, even to the extent of recruiting Boris Karloff to supply the voice of Baron Von Frankenstein. The story begins as the aged Baron invites all members of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters to attend the unveiling of his ultimate creation, a potion capable of destroying all matter. Before the assembled guests -- including Count Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Invisible Man, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon -- Frankenstein announces his retirement as the group's leader and the selection of his successor: his bookish, allergy-ridden nephew Felix. Chaos ensues, as nearly every creep and creature on the list begins conspiring against each other in a bid for the coveted office, including the Baron's outrageously voluptuous assistant Francesca (whose very presence stretches the film's "G" rating). The "Animagic" technique of stop-motion puppets is a refreshing medium for the larger-than-life monsters, and the parade of horror movie put-ons should delight viewers of all ages. Though the original negative was believed lost to neglect after the film's poor box-office performance, a pristine print has resurfaced, much to the delight of devoted fans who first discovered this gem via Halloween TV airings. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

This is not a bad movie at all, but the source and jokes feel outdated for its time. It's a shame as the idea of monster getting together is a fun idea and there are genuine moments that work. But, little kids might be put off by the outdated campy tone or be ok with it. Worth seeing just for Boris Karloff playing Frankenstien and Phyllis Diller as the monster's bride.

This is the only time I wish Phyllis Diller went to Heaven much sooner. She ruined this thing. Other than that, I noticed a few years ago the old video tapes of this were going for $50. Finally, it's released on DVD. Best Buy has this at the Best price. Half of Walmart and Target. It is a collector's item and that alone makes this a great find!

I finally bought the film I been waiting to see for soooooooo long, that finally I can say that it is to me the best claymation ever. Just like the Christmas classics, this film on it's own is incredible & the best. Gale Garnett sings the best song of the whole film, there never was a love like mine. Great song amazing film.

I remembered watching this movie when I was a child and was very excited to see it was released in DVD form. It has been a very long time since I saw this movie but it was great being able to see it again. Knowing now how hard stop-motion photography is it only makes me appreciate this movie that much more.

I remember this film from my childhood and it still brings a smile to my face. By today's standards the animation is a bit crude but for those of us who grew up with Gumby and Rudolf, it's pretty good. And where else will you hear Phyllis Diller and Boris Karloff in one film mocking and honoring the B films that made them "great". It's a fun film.

Cool that Best Buy carries it. I wish they would carry a much wider selection of older movies in their stores. I have recently been very disappointed.

A clay animation cult classic for Halloween. A collection of famous voices and a different storyline. Not your normal Halloween film.
