Alright, I came into this game with an open mind. After reading a lot of forums on what people were expecting, I myself was somewhat dreading what the game will be like. Talk about the cut scenes being hours long, how the game was overhyped.... DO NOT BE TAINTED! Honestly, this game had the same kind of impact on my "gaming memories" that FFVII did. Even in the opening credits, I was blown away. Konami really pushed the PS3 graphics engine to the max in this one, and it surely does not disappoint (especially on those 1080p HDTV's). To me, the game itself seemed more like a movie that you could interact with then a game (due to those lengthy cut scenes). As the story progresses, they build on each other, which involves you more in the plot. This in itself seems like something that would make most people call it quits early, but the good thing is that if you do not care to follow the story, those scenes can be skipped. As far as the storyline goes, you do not have to be a fan of the MSG series to appreciate them. I myself have only played MSG 2, and was completely surprised at the amount of time and effort that was put into this installment. I was able to follow the game and understand it.
'
*Key Pros to this game*
1) Top notch graphics and audio. I felt like I was watching real people on screen, and the audio reminded me of Saving Private Ryan
2) Very involved storyline could be turned into a film. The characterization and involvement of the main roles makes you remember and interact with the plot (like FFVII)
3) Innovative game play (FPS or third person) and the ability to interact with the environment you play in. Many, many times I found myself completely blown away with the epic battles and sequences the game puts you through.
'
*Key Cons*
1) Lengthy cut scenes. As I said before, you can be prepared to sit (if you choose to) and watch some 45+ minute scenes. Once again though, all scenes can be skipped.
2) Game felt short. I purchased my game the day it came out, and finished it within 25 hrs (played time). Mind you I took my time with the game as well (exploring and testing out game play mechanics). All said and done, I wish it would have been more time where you were actually playing, not watching.
'
This could last point could really be considered a pro or con, just depends on how you view it. After each section of the game is completed, you are prompted with a 1-3 minute installation for the next part. That isn't too bad time wise, but can get a little annoying if you have multiple saves and want to go back and replay. On the other hand, it does cut down the loading time between sequences in-game down to 10 seconds max.
'
Overall, I would still rate this game among my favorite games played (Bioshock and FFVII being others). The pros for this game heavily outweigh the cons. Even though stuff can get a little lengthy and sometimes boring, the overall experience is a great one. For all you sports fan gamers out there as well, it would be a good pickup. I showed the key sequences of this game to buddies of mine (who were only Madden and FIFA heads), and they immediately said they would buy it if they owned a PS3. So in short, the experience of this game is definitely worth the purchase. I can see myself returning to replay this game over and over again. 2 thumbs up in my book.

At this point Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best game I have played for the Playstation 3 so far. This also being the first in the series that I have ever played. As for many people I think this may be so. So the designer of the game has created a database that you can download that will get you up to date on what has happened in the previous entries of the game. The database also blocks all potential spoilers based on your saved content in the game you are currently playing.
As far as the game itself goes this is a really great game. The controls are very easy to get into and work very well. I will admit I didn't like the pulling up of the screens to pick your weapons and items, but after a while it all becomes second nature. As far as weapons and items you have a very large array of them, more so than other games. You can also customize them with add-ons like scopes, flash lights, silencers, etc. All of this can be done through a connection you have with an illegal arms dealer name Drebin. You can access all of this through the pause screen. So if you're running out of bullets mid fight, you can easily pause and buy more barring you have enough funds to afford the ammo. I was originally scared by the idea that this is more of a tactical game then the COD4 type of single player that I prefer. However you are able to use whatever style of game play you choose. If you want to shoot up the bad guys you are free to do so, however if you choose to use stealth you are more likely to kill less and get through areas much more easily. So MGS4 lets you choose how you get through the levels. There are also multiple difficulty levels that are well done for beginners to those who like a very difficult challenge.
The story itself is literally a movie in proportion to other games I have played. I have never seen such an involved storyline in a game before. Also, once you have caught up on the story it's actually a very well told and has a lot of interesting twists and turns. As many have said before me there is a lot of watching cut scenes. Also at times while cut scenes were being watched I said to myself why am I not actually fighting this fight. However, with all that in mind they are exceptionally well done, and do a great job at keeping you into the game, and completing the story. Without them included in the game, MGS4 isn't as good as it is. I would also suggest having at least an HD capable television for this game, as the visuals are exceptional, and it really would make watching the cut scenes a little more acceptable.
As many people don't know this game also comes packed with a multiplayer portion of the game called MGO (Metal Gear Online). I have not used this feature that much so far, but it appears to be just as well done as the single player portion of the game. With gun customization, decent maps, and good choices in multiplayer game modes. I have also heard there will be a separate release of a more full blown multiplayer in the future, so things look to be even better for this portion of the game.
Overall if you are a potential owner, or currently an owner of a PS3, and are into any form of shooter either FPS or 3rd person it doesn't really matter. You should purchase this game as it's a must have for the system.

I have to say, my 5 starts IS NOT exaggerated.
This is one of the best games I've played in a while.
For $20, this is worth every penny.
Amazing graphics, story, boss fights, weapons, gameplay, ect.
You could say it's almost perfect.
You might be thinking the 15 minute cut scenes are too long;
and I'll admit, I though that too before I played, but they're awesome.
Such good graphics, and action.
Like watching a movie.
I'll say, I'm a fan of Splinter Cell, Uncharted 2, and Alpha Protocol.
So I like stealth stuff, and you need to get this.
Metal Gear Online is just another perfection addition to MGS4.
Insane 3rd person shooter.
Buy this.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a Masterpiece. This is the grand finale to a story/game series that has been 20 years in the making. Everything from the graphics (True, Native 1080p too), the story, the sound, everything is done incredibly well. That said, this game is not for everyone necessarily. If you're not at least a casual Metal Gear fan, the story might be a major turn off. Yes the cutscenes are long and the story deep, complicated, and sometimes hard to understand. But if you've been a longtime fan of the Metal Gear Solid games this is the game you've been waiting for. The gameplay has received a major overhaul making moving around and shooting a breeze, and it's really amazing how much Snake can do and that it all works so smoothly and easy on a controller. The ability to purchase guns and ammo has made this a truly flexible game. You can sneak in or go in guns blazing, there is no limit to the amount of ways you can play this game, which leads to infinite replayability. I'm on my fourth or fifth playthrough now. Online isn't too good but that's not why anyone should be buying this game anyways. I have to note you can't purchase the added online content from the PSN Store. They must be bought by credit card from the MGO Store which sucks. But online is just a bonus to one of the greatest achievements in video game history, not just from the story and gameplay but the technology and sound as well. This is one of the few games available on any console that runs at true, native 1080p (no upscaling). And with all the stuff going on onscreen and behind the scenes like physics and all it's amazing how smoothly this game runs and just how good it looks. The character models are incredible as well as the environment and guns. Just stop and take a good look around and at your character, you'll be amazed. And the sound is beleivable and incredible. Also, where all other Metal Gears keep you in one basic area (nuke base, jungle, Big Shell, etc.) this one takes you all around the world with one or two suprises as well. To all Metal Gear fans out there, this is the masterpiece you were hoping for and yes, Raiden can actually be cool. Seriously, when he shows up you know some crazy stuff is going to happen, and it's incredible. Just don't turn it off when the credits start, you will end up missing the most jaw dropping scene in the game. It really makes your jaw drop, unless someone ruined the suprise for you.

This is flat out the best game the PS3 has to offer. Everything about this game is near perfect. Even if you haven't played any of the previous games, it's worth picking up. Of course, you'll get more out of the game if you've been a fan of the others, but the story is told in a way that it recaps the previous games as well. I can't say enough good things about it. The graphics are phenomenal, the controls are great, the sound is very impressive, there are tons of weapons, and the story is very enveloping. If you have a PS3, you need to play this game. It's that simple.
