A: The i5 is plenty for work e mails surf the web watch movies listen music the i7 is more for gaming in all aspects better resolutions for the games. I have the sc2 black i5 and is plenty for my work e mail movies and traveling. Hope this helps

A: I would say for me about 8 hours on power saver, definitely no where near 14.5
A: Microsoft controls the sales I believe. You can ALWAYS purchase the computer for the same/less if you purchase directly from Microsoft. Additionally, "Geek Squad" (Best Buy) will sell you a warranty they know they cannot honor. The Geek Squad Warranty costs more than a warranty from Microsoft and GS's contract with Microsoft says that Geek Squad cannot work on Microsoft products. All GS will do to "honor" their expensive warranty is replace your computer with a used/refurbished computer and cancel your warranty saying it's "fulfilled" because you took a replacement instead of a repair, despite the fact that repair was never an option from the start. It took me 6 weeks and a literal 20+ hours in the store and on the phone being treated like scum for them to finally help me. Best Buy is ripping people off every way they can and have put systems in place to make sure you cannot complain or get to the bottom of any issues. All you get when you contact them is a long run-around.
