Synopsis

Monsters
Two people who barely know one another are thrown into otherworldly danger in this independent thriller. Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) is an American photojournalist on assignment in Mexico at a time when working there has become unusually dangerous -- after a NASA space probe crash-landed not far from the American border, alien creatures that made their way into the satellite were released, and have since thrived in Northern Mexico. Now the area is regarded as an "infected zone," where the aliens (who resemble giant squids) have been contained but move about freely, sometimes attacking humans who cross their paths. While working on a project, Kaulder's publisher contacts him to ask a big favor; his daughter Samantha (Whitney Able) has been traveling outside the United States, and would appreciate an escort from Southern Mexico to California. Not wanting to anger his boss, Kaulder agrees and books passage on a ferry that travels through a safe zone. But bad timing, bad luck, and some foolish choices by Kaulder prevent him and Samantha from catching the ship, and now they have to travel through alien territory with the help of some armed guards, hoping to avoid contact with the bloodthirsty creatures. Monsters was the first feature film from special effects artist-turned-director Gareth Edwards. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ok this is not a horrible film but at the same time it can't decide if it want's to be a slow moving love story or a monster flick....and IMO it doesn't meld the two well enough let me be blunt by listing some of the issues i have with this. 1. amphibious giant squids from outer space land in mexico set up shop and breed out of control and they can't be wiped out even with air strikes. 2. we never learn very much about these creatures instead we are made to focus on this guy who is traveling with this girl and we get to hear all the "interesting" yawn things they say to each other. btw they should be scared out of thier minds but most of the time they don't seem to mind that there are giant carnivorous aliens roaming about. they really didn't find a realistic balance between the monsters and the so called "love story". some parts were really good but there are too many gaps with nothing but talking heads and the movie has a real dank look and feel to it....i give it a marginal see it once or twice if you have enough coffee on hand.

this movie would like you to believe its bigger than it actually is, which is part of the charm...mainly due to simple, but impressive special effects you normally wouldn't find in a movie with this type of budget. while watching, you'll notice plenty of times they cut to shots of cgi helicopters flying around...it could be a fun drinking game...and it comes across as nothing more than "look what we can do with computers!" ...it gets old, but you gotta give props for ambition. its a small nit pick for a film that definitely entices you with its characters and situation. and the blu provides more than enough for the AV/special feature junkies.

What can I say, you must see it to truly appreciate the greatness of it. It's not your typical alien movie, it is very different, I might even say it's a love story instead. Do not judge the film by it's cover or by it's title, this flick leads you in a totally different direction. Don't expect grandious special effects and non stop non sense action. Its artsy, and you must know how to appreciate "beautiful films" to get this one. I just LOVED the final scene in where the two creatures meet, something I have never seen before, it had kind of a meaning like, even the worst of us, despite the terror we can unleash, we are also capable of sharing love.

Hmmm, how to describe this movie. It's not about scares and frights. It's not really even about the monsters. In fact, with the exception of a handful of sceenes and a stunning climax, you don't really see the monsters all that much. But that makes them that much more awesome when you do.There are a lot of tense moments and drama along the way. Some beautiful scenery and moments. It's a really original movie. I think if you give it a chance you'll like it.

Monsters is not what you think it is--it's not a straight up monster or alien invasion film. Instead it focuses on the relationship between the two lead characters. This truly is a triumph of independent filmmaking given it was made by a cast and crew of just four people in several different countries. It actually looks much more expensive then it is. Highly recommended!

Loved this movie, watched many years ago on release in a independent movie festival in Brazil and love it instantly. Really low budget movie made it beautifully with the few resources available. The actors were really good and really helped the story to feel more real and really helped to bring the meaning of the tittle to a better understanding.

YES please! Glad to see the immigration conversation taken in a new avenue. This is not a big budget horror film but it is a smart horror film and if you give it times it'll open your eyes to the mistreatment of immigrants in the U.S.

Low-budget doesn't have to mean low quality. This isn't your quick-action, slam-bang summer sci-fi. This is better than that. The effects near the end are amazing and go beyond realistic into emotional.
