    Synopsis

    Moonstruck
When there's a full moon over Brooklyn, anything can happen, and everything happens in the neighborhood where widowed bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) lives. First, Loretta agrees to marry a man she does not love, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), simply because he knows how to propose properly. Before the wedding can take place, Cammareri must visit his dying mother in Sicily. In his absence, Loretta is supposed to try to patch up the differences between Johnny and his brother, bakery operator Ronny Cammareri (Nicolas Cage). Having never forgiven Johnny for indirectly causing the accident that crippled him, Ronny flies into a rage whenever his brother's name is mentioned. He does, however, fall for Loretta like a ton of bricks. After a torrid affair, Loretta tries to avoid Ronny out of respect to Johnny, but he's just too fascinating to resist. Meanwhile, Loretta's father (Vincent Gardenia) is fooling around with his mistress Mona (Anita Gillette), while Loretta's mother (Olympia Dukakis) is wooed by a college professor (John Mahoney). These brief flings are forgiven and forgotten, but there's still the delicate situation of Loretta being in love with her future brother-in-law. A now-classic romantic comedy, Moonstruck won Oscars for Cher, Olympia Dukakis, and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Moonstruck derives from a mind set for which the greatest special effect is an actor giving an interesting performance and a director's main job is to cast the right actors and orchestrate a seamless ensemble. Few have done this as well, and no one has ever done it better, than Norman Jewison in Moonstruck. The film remains as fresh today as when it was released, even now when much of the neighborhood it depicts has been knocked down and turned into condos. We can still enter its vibrant world to share great meals (and more) with the Castorinis, Cappomaggis and Cammareris. No matter how many times someone says, "I don't want to talk about it!", they're always there, still talking.

I have always loved this film. This has not changed in the years since it was released. I have a question for the film makers. Why did it take until 2006 until this wide screen edition of the film was available? New York City is a character in the film. Landscape shots make it so. I waited until I got this DVD, keep watching for it to come out. Great script. Cast perfect except for Cage. I am NOT a fan of his. I remember years ago that Olympia had her Oscar stolen. She deserved it. Cher did as well along with the script. 1 thing I do NOT like about this edition of the film. NO chapter search list or ANY INFORMATION ON THE FILM PROVIDED INSIDE. Instead you get a recipe cards? IS THIS a cooking DVD? I do NOT think so. THOUGHT IT WAS A CLASSIC, OSCAR WINNING FILM.

No sooner does Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher) accept a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), than she finds herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage). She tries to resist, but Ronny lost his hand in an accident he blames on his brother, and has no scruples about aggressively pursuing her while Johnny is out of the country. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance.

I just installed a 4K projector with a 120” screen is n my home. So I’ve been buying blu-ray movies I have not seen in years to feed it. This is a great movie! I had forgotten how amazing and funny the acting is. The big plus is the quality of this transfer to blu-ray is amazing. Looks better than many 4K discs I have.

I actually enjoyed this film even against my better intentions. It's just a silly romantic mess about a bunch of New Yorkers searching for love, but the excellent performances, and the great screenplay more than make up for any misgivings I have. It just makes you laugh and smile. Be sure to show up at a funeral "wearing a red dress". See the film, you'll understand. Recommended highly.

This little dramedy has it all. Real star power with Cher, Nick Cage, the late Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis. The comedy is light but not overpowering, the story is believable without any fluff. This movie has a lot of charm and features living and dying and loving in NYC. When you plan your next trip to NYC, make sure it involves Italian food, going to the Met and a little moon-gazing. Bellissimo!

This has always been one of my favorite films. I especially enjoy the interactions between the various members of the extended Italian-American family. Olympia Dukakis deserved her Academy award and several other cast members should have been nominated. Overall, you won't regret this movie. And the upgrade from the DVD to the Blu-ray is worth the price of admission.

I fell under the spell of this mesmerizing romantic comedy and it is on my top ten best movies of all time list. Cher (Best actress), Cage (at his best), Dukakis (Best supporting actress), Gardenia (delightful) and Aiello (very good) are all great in their portrayals of these wacky italian family members. Blu-ray 1:85:1 plus limited bonus features.
