A Budget Phone With Few Compromises & Great Value

    • Verified PurchaserVerified Purchase
    • My Best Buy® MemberMember

Design: This phone despite being a phone with a removable back has managed to pull a modern smartphone look. The black has a great soft feeling plastic which feels great in the hand. The front facing fingerprint reader is also a wonderful touch for a phone that is barely over $100. The water-resistant design is a nice touch, but don't go dunking it into water anytime soon. Display/Audio: Overall, the display is excellent. The screen is very colorful and bright. The screen can also get decently dark as well. The screen is only 1280 x 720, but it is hardly noticeable when watching videos. Speakers are decent. Sound is faithful except for the highest volume settings where the audio can become slightly distorted. They sound pretty good for a phone in this price range. OS/UI: It is great to have a phone out of the box with Nougat (Android version 7). Moto's phones have always had a great OS because they are near stock android. The near vanilla android experience in itself worth it. Camera: The camera is possibly one of the greater aspects of the phone. The phone in general gets the proper exposure in light situations. The phones are rarely grainy and focuses on objects quickly. As with every camera, the camera weakens slightly in the low light department. HOWEVER, the camera does outperform many smartphones even some mid ranges in this department. The phone also has great controls for manual mode if you want to get the best picture. The front facing camera is also great and performs as expected. Battery/Charging: For the most part, the battery life of the Moto E4 is just average but solid. In the age of larger battery capacities and quick-charge/fast charging, the Moto E4 is basically adequate. The phone can easily get you through a full day, most likely due to the fact due to good battery management, lower screen resolution, brightness controls, etc. The batteries are also swappable, so that might be a bonus for some. Storage/Memory: The base storage is a bit lacking at 16GB. However, it is really good to know that the storage is expandable up to 128GB which is more than enough. The nice thing about expansion is that you can use the external storage as internal memory. I think the ram is decent enough considering the price of the product. Processor/Performance: Perhaps the biggest weakness of the Moto E4 is the processor. However, I have seen worse processors being used around this price-point so that is something to consider as well. Now if you do light gaming, emails, basic web browsing searches, this phone performs excellently. Things like basic streaming such as videos and Netflix performed well. However, with heavier duty games, the games will show noticeable signs of stuttering and/or frame-rate issues. Other (Calls, Compatibility, Accessories, Firmware/Updates): Call quality was great. No issues or distortions. The wonderful thing about this phone is that it is UNLOCKED and works with GSM and CDMA so basically all the carriers. At the time of this review, there is only a decent amount of support for accessories. BE CAREFUL, the international version of this phone is different from the US version. Please lookout for this when choosing which accessories to buy. If you need some suggestions: I recommend for cases: Dretal or Otterbox and for screen protector: amFilm, Mr.Shield, or Supershield. The phone uses a standard micro-USB, so replacements are easy to find. Moto has been generally fast and reliable about updating their phones. The phone should get at least 2 years of android updates. Conclusion: This phone is not the greatest in the world. HOWEVER, it may be the greatest phone for what it does at this price-point. The phone is cheap without being cheap. In a way, this phone is truly king in the under $150 category. My suggestion is to choose based on your needs and willingness to pay. It is great to see a phone with great value at this price-point. And hey, at least it has a headphone jack.

Excellent Value With All The Features I Need

It's amazing what you can get for $130 these days. I will preface this by saying that I'm an IT Pro in my early 50's. I understand the technology. I've used iPhone's and most recently the Moto G 3rd Gen and Moto G4 Play. I'm a big fan the Motorola line. I'm very happy with my purchase of the Moto E4. This performs as well as the Moto G4 Play and has the awesome fingerprint reader I needed. I can't say enough about the fingerprint reader. It's fast and accurate. The battery life seems better than the G4 Play, and it charges much quicker. I'm not a gamer or video chatter. I use very few apps and only occasionally watch video on a phone. The MLB At Bat Live Video looks good on this phone. I will never need a $800+ flagship phone for performance or status. I just want a phone that can handle email, texts, a few phone calls, GPS and a few other apps. This phone does the trick. No need to spend hundreds when you can get all the basics in a nice package for so much less. Shipped with Android Nougat 7.1.1. I hold hope that Motorola will update this model in the future. Thanks Motorola for continuing to produce outstanding devices at a great price.

Great camera, lost its internal radio after weeks

Liked this phone, great camera, got good reception, but about two-months into using it, one day it lost it's connection, won't recognize a SIM card at all (got a new SIM from T-Mo, the SIMs work in other phones, but this one is hosed). Common problem with this phone if you research the forums about it. The average life of this phone is two-months, about how long I had it. Some go a year, if you're lucky. It's something with S/W and F/W that isn't fixed without sending it back. People temporarily get connection back by choosing 2G or 3G, but then it loses conn again at some point. Anyway, no rhyme or reason to when it happens. I answered a call, then sat it down on table, a few hours later it had no conn and nothing I've tried (re-loading factory F/W, upgrade/downgrade, etc.) will get the connection back.

This phone is amazing. Not only is the build quality very good, but the phone is very fast! The quad-core processor zips through menus and screens very quickly and without any noticeable lag. It is very responsive, turning on the screen as you pick it up to make sure it is ready to go before you even get your thumb in swiping position. Speaking of unlocking, the fingerprint sensor is lightning fast, and unlocks without error 100% of the time. Camera is decent, and screen is very nice and bright. Add all of that together with an unlocked device that can be used on any GSM carrier, and a sub $150 price tag? I'd like to see someone beat that combo. Definitely a recommended purchase. Also, the fine gold color looks much better in person than on the screen/website.

    Network settings are impossible

Have to keep turning phone on and off to stay on Network, it constantly says I am away from my home Network and I have to change to cdma mode and vice versa. No wifi calling, device memory settings are not modifiable. Too difficult to set up group text messaging. Calls do not come through. This is the second unlocked Moto device I will return. The first one was the g series and I had similar problems. I am better off with an old Galaxy S5 loner. Seriously, the specs are better. All this on Verizon network. Last phone was an unlocked s7 that does fine. Battery life is the only thing I like. The charge is slow though, especially with any cheer that did not come out of the box.

    More than I expected

I’ve been eyeing this phone for a while now. I’ve done my research and learned a lot about it. At the end I’ve decided to go buy this phone and to tell you the truth I regret nothing. It’s exactly what I expected and more. It has so many features for just a phone that’s $130. I really enjoy my new phone and I really recommend this phone to anyone looking for a really good smartphone on a budget. By the way I’m using it on T-Mobile.

    Horrible P.OS.

I bought this phone to replace my LG Tribute (which is also a horrible phone that I bought at Best Buy). This phone does not recognize when the headphones are plugged in, which has driven me crazy. This phone is also really buggy and will randomly close/open apps, and will lose network service where there should be service, I live in the city and have always had service throughout. I bought this prepaid Virgin Mobile as I've been a virgin mobile customers for almost 10 years and it seems like the phones get worse and worse with each model. The LG Tribute was also a virgin mobile phone. I'm returning this phone and may not ever get another phone or any electronic device from Best Buy again. I'm so tired of this bull.

Best Inexpensive Phone for Sprint Promotion

For anyone who had the Moto G4 Play, this is slight upgrade. It has a slightly faster processor and fingerprint reader. This comes with Nougat from factory. This phone was a breeze to bring over to Sprint. I was on Net10 and was able to port into Sprint within a few minutes. I like how the speaker is on the front of the phone. Seems like the phone will have decent battery life. If you can get the unlocked version of this phone for under $100, it is well worth it.
