Synopsis

Mulholland Dr.
David Lynch wrote and directed this look at two women who find themselves walking a fine line between truth and deception in the beautiful but dangerous netherworld of Hollywood. A beautiful woman (Laura Elena Harring) riding in a limousine along Los Angeles' Mulholland Drive is targeted by a would-be shooter, but before he can pull the trigger, she is injured when her limo is hit by another car. The woman stumbles from the wreck with a head wound, and in time makes her way into an apartment with no idea of where or who she is. As it turns out, the apartment is home to an elderly woman who is out of town, and is allowing her niece Betty (Naomi Watts) to stay there; Betty is a small-town girl from Canada who wants to be an actress, and her aunt was able to arrange an audition with a film director for her. Betty befriends the injured woman, who begins calling herself "Rita" after seeing a poster of Rita Hayworth. While Betty's audition impresses a casting agent, and she catches the eye of hotshot director Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux), Kesher's producers and moneymen insist with no small vehemence that he instead cast a woman named Camilla Rhodes. As Rita attempts to put the pieces of her life back together, she pulls the name Diane Selwyn from her memory; Rita thinks it could be her real name, but when she and Betty find a listing for Diane Selwyn and visit her apartment, they discover the latest victim of a mysterious killer who is eluding police detective Harry McKnight (Robert Forster). Rita's emotional identity soon takes a left turn, and it turns out that neither woman is quite who she once appeared to be. David Lynch originally conceived Mulholland Drive as the pilot film for a television series; after the ABC television network rejected the pilot and declined to air it, the French production film StudioCanal took over the project, and Lynch reshot and re-edited the material into a theatrical feature. The resulting version of Mulholland Drive premiered at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, where David Lynch shared Best Director honors with Joel Coen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Criterion has done Lynch proud again with this stunning new Blu-ray release of his 21st century masterpiece that pops and shimmers in 4K glory capturing the allure of sun-drenched, facade enclosed Hollywood in true Sunset Boulevard fashion with Naomi Watts as with the rest of the cast giving a darling performance as an aspiring actress who finds herself caught up in mystery and romance with an alluring amnesiac and her bag full of money all the while a young hot shot movie director finds his marriage on the rocks while the movie he's currently directing is being taken over by ruthless producers who aren't afraid of using brute force to get their way. Extras while in listing deceptively seem light but the four interview segments found are fairly long and extensive much like previous efforts documenting Lynch's work coupled with a rather odd deleted scene and the theatrical trailer. Overall this is a release that was totally worth the long wait and will hopefully serve alongside last year's Eraserhead release as the jumping point for more future Lynch releases from Criterion. Fabulous and recommended.

What else can be said besides David Lynch on top of his game once again. Stylish, sexy, thought-provoking, chilling, and eerie. Great acting performances across the board as well. The story of a young aspiring actress who comes to Hollywood with dreams of becoming a star. Watching her story of coming to grips with "Hollywood" is downright breathtaking and the movie might take a couple viewings just to wrap your brain around. Masterpiece!

Mulholland Dr. is another David Lynch masterpiece. Not as hard to put your mind around as Eraserhead and not as linear in storyline as Blue Velvet or Wild at Heart, and much more satisfying than Lost Highway. A beautiful film that merits repeated viewings; especially this Criterion edition which is just stunning. Plus the supplemetal material is a huge bonus. So grab a cup of coffee and some pie and enjoy!

This is one of the greatest movies ever made. Explanations as to why would require far more space than available here. Anyone claiming to be a cinephile should have this film in their collection. Criterion's blu-ray isn't perfect, but unless you're freeze-framing it and looking for problems, you'll very likely never see them. Watched normally, the audio/visual presentation is breathtaking.

I watch all kinds of movies, and some are more "out there" than others. I found this movie to keep my attention the entire time, always wondering what was going to happen next, or where the heck is this going? It is extremely well done, no question about that, it is just very different. So if want to stress your brain, even after it is over, then this is for you!

This is a fantastic movie made even better by an outstanding Criterion release. It's a shame Best Buy doesn't really carry Criterion's in the store anymore - they are a little pricy for most, but if you are a film fan, they are hard to beat and worth every penny.

Pieces of this movie are still being debated in my house. It will keep you on the edge of your seat while watching it and discussing it after its over. Great movie, dramatic and sensual. Would not recommend for younger viewers, but a great adult discussion movie.

My first full viewing of a David Lynch film, I found Mulholland Drive to be a great film. Not one of my absolute favorites, but one of the best.
