I am a novice, but the first pictures I took at a night baseball game for my grandson were outstanding. The quality along with the Nikon flash attachment produced the best sport pics I have ever done. I had to remain close to the action, but the lens worked wonderfully.

Don't get this lens. It's images are not sharp! You gotta be kidding, right? It's a Nikon after all. Most Nikon lenses are very good to great, but this lens is a dud! That's right, Nikon laid an egg. If you like this zoom range, 24-120mm, like I did, do yourself a favor and get the updated version of this lens: Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR AF-S Lens. It's $1,300 versus $670 for this one. Yeah, big price difference. This lens originally sold for $1,200 but soon everybody in the know found out it's a junk. That's why it's so cheap (relatively speaking) since they need to unload this un-Nikon-like lens. If you can't swing for f/4.0 model, then consider Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF AF Zoom Lens instead.

You may need to buy a faster lens or use a higher ISO setting.
