Synopsis

Ninja Scroll
Removed from the typical futuristic element of most Japanese animated adventures, this 1994 feature takes place in more of a sword-and-sorcery epic set in feudal Japan. Jubei Kipagami, a ninja mercenary, wanders the countryside in search of work. On his travels, he encounters Kagero, a female ninja whose poisoned blood causes her pale skin to be lethal to the touch. Jubei rescues the woman from Tessai, a creature made of rock. They later find that Tessai is one of the Eight Devils of Kimon, who are involved in a plot to overthrow the Shogun. A story of impossible love between Jubei and Kagero is somewhat interesting, but the true draw of Ninja Scroll is its action sequences. The dazzling swordplay of Japanese live-action samurai movies is not often seen in the animated genre, which tends more towards science fiction; however, this animated work has fight scenes in abundance. Although its content is too strong for children, adult fans of Japanese animation, samurai films, and fantasy should find it enjoyable. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

Genre: Action, Supernatural, Mature Mature due to some nudity and nonconsentual acts. "Swords shatter, blood sprays and demons suck the life out of dying men as the wildest samurai adventure ever made is unleashed to tear your senses asunder! Jubei Kibagami has always been the master dealer of death, but in rescuing a ninja woman from a monster he sets loose a chain of events that puts death in his own veins and sends them on a nightmarish odyssey through a surreal and devil infested ancient Japan. How do demonic possessions, an annihilated village and a man Jubei thought safely buried in his past all connect? If Jubei can't piece the blood-soaked clues together, his only consolation will be that he won't live to regret if for very long! Prepare your mind and steel your gut for the insanely gore-packed o.r.g.y. of violence that still stands alone and unchallenged as the ultimate anime action feature: the epic milestonein animation that is the legendary NINJA SCROLL." Ninja Scroll is one of the old ninja action movies that's been updated by Sentai Filmworks into the modern HD age. Being in Blu-ray really does wonders for the quality versus the original programming. However, the movie is still in the old 4:3 format that is designed for your old tube TVs. Tons better than VHS, though! I still have the old DVD release of this one and even though I hadn't watched it in a long while, getting a Blu-ray release for any anime is awesome enough to warrant the purchase especially for only $20. Don't expect anything out of the extras. About 5 trailers which are just clips with some music playing to them. Sentai doesn't invest much on extras :/

    Top Notch R-Rated Anime

This is the epitome of anime for adults. The story of the lone ronin Jubei is worthy of the term epic. His back story is unveiled in creative and timely flashbacks, and the path he walks in the film coincidentally converges with his past in an astonishing display of storytelling magic. The supporting characters and villians are so fleshed out and memorable that each of them could easily have movies of thier own (that is, of course, if Jubei didn't have to kill every single one of them in violent, graphic and just-as-memorable ways!) This is the pinacle of 90's anime in terms of framerates, detail, visuals, voice acting, and storytelling. The violence is indeed gratuitous, but the nudity is not x-rated and always has a purpose... No robots, no spaceships, and yet it is the be-all and end-all of stand-alone anime movies.

It is no surprise that they are re-releasing this treasure and keep it in production. It holds up to anime techniques and style of even modern times which borrow many thems and techniques that have roots to this film. The legendary Jubei swordsman is an ongoing theme in many anime stories and this one is no different. Pitted against enemies with the power of traveling through shadows and skills of changing their skin to stone. It is simply one of the most frenetic displays of action anime of such a period of ninjas. Naruto fans of today who have never seen this one would be pleased with this timeless thrashing classic.

The main characters, Jubei Kibagami, a homage to the famed Japanese samurai folk hero. With Kagero, a beautiful Kunoichi. Dakuan an old monk, who is a Tokugawa Shogunate operative. they team up to stop Gemma and the eight devils of Kimon. This is an excellent story with graphic sceens of voilence. I will start by saying that this is probably the greatest anime ninja movie of all time. The action is amazing, the villains are unique, and the story is one of the best ever told. This movie holds its place in this day and age even if it is from 1995, the quality still looks amazing compared to some of the new ones. If you never seen anime this is probably the one to start with, you will not be disappointed. There is no other movie out there like this one.

This is one of those anime movies that is really caught up on action. It's about a ninja warrior who battles an old enemy he thought he once killed. But somehow has been brought back from the dead. And he must help an old man because he has poisoned him with a ninja star.He will give him the antidote when he finishes his task. The voice acting is spot on with the characters actions, and emotions. This movie is definitely not for kids.
