Audio is hard to hear, disappointing

I have used Olympus recorders for years, especially the very small WS models. I looked forward to this model as it was more compatible with my Mac and I hoped it would simplify transcribing interviews and spoken notes. But I was very disappointed when I listened to the recordings. I could barely hear the words, even when audio levels were turned to the highest point. Since purchasing, I have read many complaints online about the difficulty hearing the sound. Someone neglected quality control with this model. Go back to the drawing board, Olympus. There is a strong market for compact digital voice recorders, especially those compatible with Mac. And Olympus should know by now that users want voice to text capability. We spend too many hours transcribing. Aim for a smaller, more attractive recorder form. The WS-400 was a great size but incompatible with Mac. There are many thousands of journalists, doctors, executives, sales people, etc. who need a digital voice recorder with the quality Olympus is known for. But we need to be able to hear it!! And we want to quickly convert spoken words to text, e.g. notes in a Word document. The state of the art with digital recorders should be more advanced by now. Give us a better model that can actually be heard. At a reasonable price.

Before purchasing the Olympus WS-853, I first purchased a comparable Sony model. The Sony has some finer points, but promptly got returned for lack of durability and failure to provide simplified instructions. Now I'll first start by saying that voice recorders in general are rarely easy to operate no matter the brand. However, they do offer certain advantages to using an app on your mobile phone, making them necessary for some individuals (students, business persons, etc.). This Olympus model is very good, and in my opinion, better than the Sony for two simple reasons. The quality of the recording is far more clear, and the instructions are lengthy but straightforward. Battery life is also exceptional. There is one feature that Sony did cover, but Olympus doesn't. That is the ability to begin a recording, and then add on to that same recording at a later time. Though I am not happy about this, I still appreciate a better audio quality more.

I normally don't write reviews, but I was so disappointed with Sony and am so thrilled about the Olympus recorder. I had ordered a Sony recorder that is comparable to this. It was about $55. It was the most complicated thing to set up and in the end didn't work with mac as advertised. For another $25 I picked this up and am so thrilled. Much more user friendly and works as soon as you plug it into the computer and opens files up in iTunes automatically. No need to download any drivers etc.. Couldn't have asked for anything more convenient. The sound is very crisp too. I used the Sony in my lecture and all I could hear is the professors voice in the distance with white noise in the background. This Olympus recorder only picks up the voice and is very clear. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends. You won't be disappointed with this recorder. (I use this on my macbook air)

I purchased this because I purchased a really cheap version of similar product. The very, I mean very inexpensive one from Amazon did all features I liked but the program written to make it so was cumbersome. So I wanted to pay a higher price for the convenience of all the bells and whistle to just press one button to record from phone, one button to review files one button to delete files etc. Well I'm not really happy with my purchase since I'm not getting the easy high tech experience from this product as I expected. And it seems this product has such a small market specialty that what I want is now $200 and upwards. Years pelrior I had gotten all bells and whistles for around $100 or just under. My advise is not to just look for the features but also how are these features handled by the the product. If you have the patience to press a series of buttons for a command go for the amazo. Cheaper one. If you like to have the latest tech and easy 1 bam you're there features be prepared to dish out more than this product

I use this for dictation. It picks up my voice nicely and saves it to an MP3 file which can be used with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. The overall accuracy is very good. My only complaint is that if you hold the recorder to close to your mouth, it will pick up the wind noise from plosive phonics. The trick is to hold the recorder about 2 to 3 inches away and speak in a relatively normal voice. I've also tested this recorder in conversation, and it picks up both sides rather nicely. There's an excellent noise reduction mode during playback which eliminated the road noise recorded while I was driving. I haven't tried this for music, but it does have stereo microphones so I expect it will do a decent job. This is an excellent machine for anyone doing dictation or looking to share audio files recorded on the go.

I needed a voice recorder for work that was easy to use and that I could lend to co-workers to record interviews for me to transcribe. I wanted something within my price range that was easy to use, used regular batteries (because no one remembers to charge things) and had a USB plugin to download files. I have to say that this had everything on my list and then some. It comes with rechargable AAA batteries so we can recharge or use regular AAA which is great. The sound quality and mic is good, it cuts down on most background noises. It comes with special software so that you can view recordings on a calendar level. So I can tell who recorded what based on when the recorder was checked out. It even came with a case and a built in USB connection so we don't have to worry about wires when transferring. The USB also charges the rechargeable batteries. All around great buy.

Haven't had much time to speak to the sound quality of the recordings from this device but know enough to say they are at the very least as good as the last Olympus we had and especially in high quality they are very good. It's recording capacity, especially on lower quality, is a real plus! What we liked best about the recorder is how easy it is to set up. This one, unlike our old one, does not have it's own software for downloading the recordings, which we found quickly went out of date and was hard to run on different Windows systems. Instead this new one works very much like a flash drive and you can simply plug it in and use the audio player of your choice to listen to and organize your recordings.

The batteries geek after about 2hrs of constant recording. The sound quality is fine, but it did not meet my needs. If you only plan on using it in hour intervals then you may be ok. The controls are easy enough to get a hold of, with one exception. In order to FF to the end of a long recording you will have to X4 it all the way. The only way to get to it faster is to go to the next recording then RW past that recording start to get into the previous file. The speakers in the system are pretty weak so you will need headphones to review. While its not a bad product, it doesn't meet my needs will be returning.
