    Synopsis

    Play Misty for Me
Play Misty for Me marked Clint Eastwood's debut as a director, and it gave him the then-unusual opportunity to play a regular contemporary guy in a thriller about sex, obsession, and stalking. Eastwood's Dave Garver is a self-centered California jazz disc jockey struggling with the idea of committing to his on-again, off-again girlfriend Tobie (Donna Mills). One night he meets the mini-skirted Evelyn (Jessica Walters) in a bar, and he goes home with her for what he assumes is a one-night stand. Dave discovers, however, that Evelyn has repeatedly called his show requesting that he "play 'Misty' for me," and she is not about to go gently into the night now that she has bedded him. Even though it touches on the early-'70s flashpoints of sexual liberation, studio execs expressed doubts about why anyone would want to see a movie featuring Eastwood as a deejay. Eastwood reportedly answered that he was not sure either, but he thought it was a good suspense story, and he offered his services as director for free. Play Misty for Me wound up making five times more than it cost and is a precursor to such erotic thrillers as Fatal Attraction (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992). Eastwood mentor Don Siegel appears early on as a bartender. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

      A great directorial debut

Misty is up there with Citizen Kane, Duel, & Boyz N the Hood (the respective directorial debuts of Orson Welles, Steven Spielberg, & John Singleton) as one of the all-time great freshman directorial outings. Eastwood was already a movie star before he fulfilled his life long ambition to direct with this movie. His skill behind the camera led to his (arguably) more-acclaimed second career as a film director. However, his performance as the deejay who gets more than he bargained for when he embarks on what he believes is a casual relationship with a fan (played on a wonderfully scary note by Jessica Walter), who wants something much more from her interactions with him, is noteworthy because, while we may not quite agree with his attitude toward such issues, his character, Dave Garver, still wins our sympathy because he doesn't encourage his nemesis the way the male leads in the lesser films this classic inspired (such garbage as Fatal Attraction, Poison Ivy, The Crush, Swimfan, Basic Instinct, and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) do. Don Siegel, who directed Clint several times (not least of which in Dirty Harry) has a wonderful small role as a bartender.

Clint Eastwood makes his directorial debut and stars in this...be careful who you sleep with...lady goes psycho thriller. The story is solid and the actress who plays the nut case is very convincing as the over the top jealous female all men should stay very far away from.

I love this movie. Good period piece: the original fatal attraction movie! Great price, too.
