As a big action movie/TV fan, I was all set to enjoy 'Powers- Season 1' for the ruggedly clever, superhero-themed series it appears to be. But I was swimming in deeper waters than I thought. With each episode, it dawned on me that the characters and the story arc were written with much more complexity than the 'hero-shows' normally enjoy. I have not read the graphic novel that the series was adapted from, but the layered themes are impressive, as were the show's filmmakers and cast. The story pushes beyond the personal struggles of good-vs.-evil into societal xenophobia, the seductiveness and addictiveness of power, and the boundaries of justice itself. I felt like I was swept out to sea by a massive riptide...and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

I never read, let alone heard of, the graphic novel that this show is based upon. I'm neither a gamer nor a follower of PlayStation and the "PlayStation Network" this series is on; I simply stumbled on this show while browsing the new DVD releases on Best Buy's web site. The description sounded mildly intriguing, so I bought it "cold" #e.g., without foreknowledge#. I don't regret it since I knew what the risks were; I own up to the mistake and take the loss. The first season of any TV series is often the worst because the cast and crew are fleshing out everything. Tried as I did to be objective and give the benefit of the doubt, I counted more cons than pros with this series. Many of this show's reviews in the IMDb were spot-on for the most part. In a nutshell, I had to force this show down...so I'll forego the displeasure of a second helping, hope I can get the bad taste out, and pray an enema won't be necessary.

I don't think it's bad but you need to get past the first couple episodes which are slow. It does get a lot better, but it also isn't a show for everyone. It's not the Avengers or some family friendly superhero show. Lots of F bombs, violence and some brief nudity (male behind) it's dark, gritty and shows people with superpowers acting like celebrities and many don't care about helping others just how famous they can be. As for the acting. It's not sharlto's greatest performance, but he's giving it his all. An actor is only as good as the director after all. The calista character is annoying as is the Kaotic chic gang. They bugged me. As I said it did get a lot more interesting as it progressed. Left off with a cliffhanger, so season 2 should be a lot better. Just needs better directing I think. Gave it 5 stars since it is different, has potential and I liked Sharlto Copley since District 9:)

Think watchmen but a million times worse than that. The show looks high enough quality. The problem is with the acting. The dialogue sounds very forced. Lots of bad language, but it never sounds natural. It's like listening to robots swear and trying to get them to show emphasis, it just doesn't work. Steeps low like so many shows these days and relies on cheap tricks to sell the show but none of it is something you really want to see. Unless people stop buying this kinda stuff, studios will keep pumping them out. It's an all around poor attempt by sony to convince people to pay for multiplayer and receive this as a bonus. It's free for ps+ members and it still isn't worth watching at that price.

I've been excited for this series ever since it was announced and it did not disappoint! Of coarse it was made on the cheap but honestly thats fine.. It resembles its comic book counterpart but changes it enough to keep you guessing. The performances across the board were cast amazingly well but the young female newcomer is going to be a star someday!

The blu-ray release for Powers is pretty great. The show aired exclusively on The Playstation Network so it's great to finally get to watch it. I loved it as a fan of the original comic book, and my girlfriend liked it as well without ever reading the books. Special effects left a little to he desired but strong performances throughout.

Great series so far! Varies a bit (naturally) from the comic book series, but very engaging and keeps you wanting that next episode. Great for "comic book geeks", and also for people who just love good story telling and procedural shows (although this isn't traditional in the one case to solve per week style).

Bought this mainly because I was interested in how the graphic novel could be made into a live action video story. I was a little disappointed by this adaptation to video. Should have read the review that was posted before I bought it, which was also a bit negative.
