Safe and Enjoyable Practice, Informed by Western Medicine Relax into Yoga offers a gentle yet challenging practice, informed by Western Medicine. The creators both have extensive experience working in medical settings—Carol at Duke Integrative Medicine and Kimberly at Oregon Health Sciences University. Real-life models demonstrate basic and modified versions of bed-based, seated, and up-and-down postures. Language is appropriate for the target population of seniors. Beginning with breath awareness and body scan, releasing judgment and expectation, the narrator guides the practice. Pacing, tone of voice, and pauses encourage inclusion and provide for modification. Short vinyasa segments encourage healthy breathing and build to stronger holds. On all fours, the suggestion to cushion the knees is a good one, while the option to weight-bear on the fists and knuckles could be replaced by an accordion fold of the mat or a wedge for the heels of the hands. The sit-stand sequence is especially beneficial to strengthen the leg muscles and prevent falls. This DVD proceeds in a logical and enjoyable manner, and the viewer can choose one sequence or combine them. For those of us who are reluctant to promote DVDs because they do not provide feedback, this one offers a safe and enjoyable practice. As an occupational therapist and yoga therapist, I recommend this one to my clients. New beginners and yoga teachers alike will find it a valuable addition to their resources.

This video is wonderful for anyone that is looking to teach or practice yoga in a relaxing, soothing manner. Although the poses are aimed at a more senior population, people of all ages will benefit from moving through the sequences. Carol and Kimberly have a great way with words. The instructions are easy to understand and many modifications are offered. I have used some of the sequences in my senior and beginner yoga classes.
