Q: QuestionAre the Insignia NS-SP2133 speakers magnetically shielded. Can they be used next to a PC and monitor?
Asked by micro.
- A:Answer Nothing in the specifications or user's guide says they are, so I seriously doubt it. But unless you're using an old CRT monitor, where you position the speakers relative to the monitor is utterly irrelevant - LCD displays aren't affected by magnetic fields. (And anyway, magnetic fields don't "damage" CRT monitors, so if by some truly wild chance you're still using one of those and it does cause the display to distort, you could always just move the speaker until the effect stops.) As for positioning it near a PC, don't worry about that either. The whole idea that ordinary magnetic fields will erase or corrupt data on hard drives is basically an urban myth, albeit one at least based in "fact" (of a sort). It would take a VERY strong magnetic field to affect a computer hard drive (and if you have an SSD, it would be, again, utterly irrelevant). And when I say "very strong magnetic field," I mean nothing short of what you might have to worry about if you' were trying to use a laptop with a mechanical HD while having an MRI taken<lol>, or if you lived or worked next door to a high energy particle accelerator. (That's a joke, of course...)

Q: QuestionThese speakers are 80W max. Can it be hooked up to a 200W receiver?
Asked by Robert.
- A:Answer The question is not how many watts your receiver has but rather the nature of your sound source, the loudness setting on your receiver, and the level of the bass you would be happy with. In the 1970's -1980's most quality receivers were running in the neighborhood of 25 to 45 watts per channel and sounded great. Speakers back then were designed to make maximum use of receiver/amp power. While it is possible to blow out a speaker with too much watts, it is more likely to cause speaker problems by too little power and cause distortion. Watch the ohms rating on the particular speaker - 4 ohm require more power than 6 or 8 ohm speakers. Some receivers can run too hot using 4 ohm speakers in parallel and your receiver would be much happier with 6 or 8 ohm speakers. The final sound quality of a good speaker is the test of just how it sounds to your ears in your listening environment. A small well designed speaker matched with good stereo equipment is still a personal choice just like cars and food- one reason that Jazz and Classical music is still the guideline for stereo. Read speaker reviews and see the experience of other buyers - are they happy with the sound and note if they are listening to the same type of music you are! These speakers are a honest experience and in a good small room will provide good sound, they will not shake the walls but if that is your goal go to a another type of speaker and of course more money. Hope this information is of some help.
