tracfone needs to have a plan in order for it to be used. I have had an older model tracfone myself for many years as an emergency or travel phone long before I had a cell phone for everyday use. The tracfone plan I started with and still renew every 3 months is a 90 day, 60 minute plan. The minutes roll over and since I use it rarely I now have over 1000 minutes to use in an emergency...or however I need to use them. You have to keep the program active so I signed up for automatic renewal so I don't lose the minutes. This is cost of under $8 per month. It does not give you a lot of minutes if you or whoever is going to use phone wants to talk a lot. Tracfone does have other plans and you can just add minutes as long as you have a plan like my 90 day plan. They have an annual plan - I don't recall the cost or the number of minutes. A plan with roll over minutes is best so if one month or 90 days you don't use all the minutes you don't loose them. My sister had another phone which she got for emergencies and never used it or rarely but after years of having and renewing the minimum charge on that phone (I believe $10 per month) she still had only 60 minutes or maybe it was only 30 minutes. I finally bought this new tracfone for her so her minutes will accumulate. I have loaded it with the initial 90 day plan and hope to set up the renewals maybe as an on going gift to her so she doe not have to worry about this one and has minutes when she needs it.
