- Answer It won’t take the newest version of OS much longer. Older versions still work, but eventually they will stop doing security updates. If you need it for med school you should buy a new one. They enter “obsolete” status in 5-7 years. That said I have a 2009 iMac and I love it. Time to get a new one!
