The GPS+cellular watch uses your telephone & telephone number for phone calls, texts, etc when you’re connected to your phone via bluetooth and also independently when your phone is out of range. The GPS only version connects via bluetooth and only works when your phone is connected and in range. It works on most cellular networks, but your phone and watch have to use the same network. I have Verizon for both my watch (series 3) and my iPhone, and it costs roughly $10-15 a month through Verizon to use my watch as “another line”. If you don’t want to use your watch independently and pay an additional monthly amount to your service provider, I suggest buying the GPS only version and saving yourself $100. It all depends on how you intend to use your watch.

However, if you are not going to use the watch independent of the phone, I would save yourself $100 and get the one with GPS only. It works on most major carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile), but if you have another carrier i.e. Metro PCS, Boost mobile, etc., I would call them to determine if you can use it on their network as well.

You can use it as previous watch versions, where it teathers from your phone, but as in past versions, you would need to be near your phone. I’ve tried it both ways and works awesome either way. Just a matter of what you want! Hope you enjoy your watch as much as I do!
