“If unit is plugged in, I'm assuming the battery is in device? Or should it be removed? Can you have battery in along with being plugged in in case of power failures for extended absence from home?”

Yes, the battery has to be inside the camera in order for it to turn on. You could also have it hard wired in at all times as well if you'd like, but the batteries do hold a charge for a very long time.

BUT, you will need a battery backup for your base station, such an a APC computer backup system so that when there is an outtage, your cameras and base system continue to record and function.
