Yes, the battery has to be inside the camera in order for it to turn on. You could also have it hard wired in at all times as well if you'd like, but the batteries do hold a charge for a very long time.

BUT, you will need a battery backup for your base station, such an a APC computer backup system so that when there is an outtage, your cameras and base system continue to record and function.
