I'm trying to decide between setting up a 16TB NAS or a large external HD RAID, and someone told me that if my router has a fast connection (i.e., USB 3.0) than an HD or RAID would act very much like a NAS and would always be accessible for media files, whereas hooking up the drive or RAID as an external HD to a computer means the computer must be left on to access media files. If so, I'd replace my router!”

Yes. You can connect a USB 3 hard drive to the newer Asus routers and use the Asus to access your files through the network. Asus uses a router App called AiCloud. You will have much better performance using the newest Asus router models. Make sure you read the information for each model of Asus router before you decide... However performance will probably not be as good using the router as a high performance stand alone NAS.
