It seems to me that this phone is designed for people who already have a voicemail system through their carrier's account. For instance, I have Verizon voicemail, so I don't need an additional voicemail/ message recording system with my phone set. Some elderly people like my mother still appreciate being able to screen calls through the voice message system and answer only if they recognize the caller. Service carriers' landline voicemail systems tend not to offer this option. Hope this helps.
