  • QuestionWhat exactly is the rear document feeder for? And, why is this printer marked down on at least two sites I checked? Is something wrong with it?

    • Answer It can be used for anything (more paper) but is most useful for heavy grade photo paper. The main benefit of this printer is the very high quality photo printing capability. So we usually leave 5 x 7 photo paper in the rear upright "tray" and regular 8.5 x 11 paper in the main tray. The photos it prints are really great! Other printing is fine, too, but what stands out with this printer is the photo output. There's nothing wrong with the printer. I think that if you look around, you'll see that almost all consumer electronics now go on sale at the same price, at the same time. For the most part, sales are dictated by the manufacturer so all the stores put the same thing on sale at the same time. It's hard to see how else it could work, since people check prices on the internet and won't want to buy (for instance) that printer at Best Buy if Office Depot has it on sale and Best Buy doesn't (or vice versa). So the manufacturer coordinates pricing and timing and all the stores put things on sale at the same time.

    • Answer YES and NO. The Canon PIXMA TR8520 will scan a multiple sheet document ejecting the sheets of the document into a holding bin. It will then display a message that you must rotate and re-insert the original document into the ADF. It will then scan the back sides and print the document based on your one-sided vs. two-sided printing options. My old Canon PIXMA MX922 was full automatic unlike the TR8520.

  • QuestionWhat canon ink cartridge does it use?

    • Answer Good question! I’m new to this printer myself. The number on the cartridges that came with my printer are Canon 281 for pink, yellow, blue and one of the blacks. There is another double size black that says 280 PGBK. The associate at Best Buy told me this printer uses two blacks, it has one black for documents, and the other is for photos. Haven’t tried the photos yet.

  • QuestionDoes the feature that "automatically powers up the printer whenever you send a document to be printed" actually work? By WiFi? Will it power on when you print from a mobile device and a laptop? Does it have to be in Sleep Mode to power on?

    • Answer Yes, you must turn this on in the settings if you would like to use the feature. Out of the box, it isn't activated. Yes it will work by Wi-Fi and from a mobile device or any PC (including laptops) It doesn't have to be in sleep mode to be powered on, you can push the power button to turn it off and then print something and it will come back on and turn itself off after a certain amount of time goes by (which is also controllable by you)

Found on AMAZON, these worked well - E-Z Ink (TM) Compatible Ink Cartridge Replacement for Canon 280 281 PGI-280XXL CLI-281XXL for PIXMA TR8520...Printer (10 Pack). Also, bought cartridges from local printer re-fill store.
